Interesting. For my Everest, I just modified a windshield wiper insert so that it holds the checkpin in place. That way it is always "held in check." I should try picking it without this insert, to observe the binding order.

This particular lock favors CCW picking and requires the check pin to be picked more than once. When providing CW tension, the check pin is the first binder but I struggle to fully pick the upper pins as they keep popping back down or refuse to bind at all.
Funny thing is....... All 7 used locks I bought on eBay this past month favor CCW picking, these include American, Schlage and Abus. Not sure if it's because of worn internals or a freak accident.

Based on the the mechanism of the Everest's operation, I could see the check pin interspersed into the binding order of the top pins under a couple of conditions. First and probably most likely is a fluke of machining tolerance or wear; if the tolerances are loose or the lock is worn, the plug may be turning enough before all six pins are set to require tripping the check pin to continue. The other condition that comes to mind is if the lock has been aftermarket-pinned with spool drivers, the lock may begin to enter into a false set, and - as with the previous theory - the check pin must be manipulated to continue.

Both of the above are random theories, so take them for what they're worth :D . Congrats on your pick!

Thanks for the explanation mate. This makes your picking even cooler :)

Hey kilae,
You are a better picker than last time we met. Congrats on the opening. I have some DOM like yours and know it's a very difficult lock.
Cheers :)

Fradon padlock with Maxis key.

The keyway...

Yes, the keyway is perfectly round. You need to tension the lock by making a tension wrench about the same width as the diameter of the keyway, and apply tension to the same pins you are trying to pick. And it has security pins.

Chinese disc detainer lock

Image

Picked with a southord slimline ball pick, I turned each disc at its maximum and aplied tension to the back of the lock to open it,
there is no spring pushing the shackle.

(well, not picked exactly today, but with the forum backup...)

Thought this would be a good one to share....
so , a few days back, I overheard a conversation at work about lost tubular keys. Customer is given option to travel to our location or a secondary location for lock decoding and key originating. Today, that customer shows up at our shop. Upon inspection, turns out that the tubular device has no pins, it is only a warded tubular plug thar turns. I used to tension wrenches to unlock it.
as the customer has no way of securing "keys "; and the tubular plug is 2.5 times larger then standard. We agreed upon a solution for him. He can open with a dime now.
was a unique lock. First I came across. ...

Congrats, Robotnik. Still remember my first Kaba 8. My first multi-row dimple was a Sargent Keso, but the Kaba 8 was from was my first Popsicle-stick dimple lock, too. Keep it up! :D

Thanks. Still a long way off from a Keso, but good to tackle something more robust than the AutoLock Pro I took on first; that was too easy to learn much of anything from :D .

Unable to sleep I resumed my fight with a Schlage Everest KnK cylinder I had gotten off Ebay, it finally gave up its long fight with me and opened several times.
I decided I needed a new challenge and decided to get back to working on my Medecos. After working through my 5-pin UL-rated mortice cylinder with progressive excercises I got it up to all five chambers. Then this happened:
