Hi guys, im still practicing with an old union cylinder that i tool off the shed repinned it for 3 stacks.NOOObie mistake ( i forgot how springy springs can be and not to mention where the top pins have gone is any bodys guess). any how i was looking through the usual sites looking for a cheap source of locks etc, when i had a brainwave why not ask for free ones? in the uk there are a couple of free recycling sites listed in local areas one is called http://ilovefreegle.org/the other is called http://www.freecycle.org/its simple to join you can find LOADS of stuff and get rid of loads of stuff too. so back to this brainwave i put on a wanted add for locks All types i must admit to having to explain to the moderators that it was a hobby of repairing and fixing old and any broken locks. then low and be hold i kid you not 20 mins after the ad was posted i recived an email from a gentleman 2.5 miles away saying he had a Yale rim lock and a 5 lever mortice lock that he no longer wanted and i could pick them up this evening how cool is that. 1 no cost 2 actualy come with keys 3 have to drive past the end of this particular road to take the kids to a kids club christmas party 4 more puzzles for a NOOB may i also take this oppertunity to say seasons greatings to all the pickers and thier familes out there in the big wide world

Steve,
Congratulations on the free locks. I may follow your example here.
And season's greetings returned to you and your family from me and mine,
Gordon

Thanks for the tip steve

Yeah, Steve! Very cool indeed. I'll sign up for both right now. Many thanks as I can't resist this. Sort of like a lock lottery!

In other local news, local and state police are on the lookout for the freecycle killer. The killer is known to lure unsuspecting victims with the promise of free locks.......... Stay safe!!!
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!

Well, I got my first hit using Steve's suggestion. Soooo happy. An email from a guy who lives close who says he's "got an large, old padlock" without a key I can have. Oh what joy! I can't wait to see what I've got. Now to risk life and limb to achieve the mission. If I disappear from the forum in the next couple of days, don't forget that I love you all Well, a tinnie winnie bit in a nice macho homeboy type of way ...... of course ...... *cough*.

The key is don't allow these people near your house, meet them someplace nice and public. I'm a fan of bank lobbies myself, especially if there is going to be money changing hands. Lot's of people, security guards and no 'I only have $30' excuses.

I get all kinds of pad locks from storage unit places. when they have a auction for unpaid fees they cut the locks of and trash them usely. I go to the auctions and ask the people that cut the locks off if I can have them. i get a few strang looks but I tell them I use them to practice my lock picking hobby. I have 30 pluses pad locks to practice on. Granted I don't have keys for them and I cant use them to lock any thing up. but I get a wide veriaty of pad locks from the cheap China to some very nice disk locks. it seams the cheap locks are harder to spp than the nicer locks but hey they are free and I get to sit and pick locks for a hour and not have to pick the same lock severial times

Hi everyone I have three hobbies, woodworking, rebuilding woodworking tools, and lockpicking. I also collect different types of safes. Because of the size and weight, I don't keep more than one of each type of safe. My wife gets a little testy when I have more than 10 safes in our garage.
I have found estate auctions to be a good source for all of the above. I get locks, I can practice on, usually for next to nothing. I have hauled away large locked safes for $1 each. So far the only thing of value I have recovered from a safe is a 22 semi auto pistol. Maybe one day there will be a stash of gold bars.

I know the excitement of free locks. I got a big coffee container full of locks from the local locksmith. He was very helpful with getting me locks. Bought him a big pizza. Love it. Docjon

At my university, anyone who leaves their lock on their locker after the semester is over gets their lock clipped off. I have a deal worked out where those locks come my way. Also, I get the option of having them cropped off or picking them off myself! Imagine that, I get a training room! Just a tip for you guys, it worked out for me.

You'll be surprised how handy it will be for Your new Welding hobby, to have all those padlock shackles to repair some are bound to be brass too, so you'll get to braze as well!

Also I am uk based I do the same thing. You should try and go to your local council tip and strip some off the doors, they are usually really decent guys in there.
