A few of the other locksmiths in our company have told me stories about finding dead people when they pick doors open. I have only been in this business for for a few years and so far it has not happened to me which is totally fine. One guy told me about how he opened a bedroom door for a guy who's dead son was inside laying on the bed. The customer was so distraught the locksmith just left without even trying to collect for the job. A different locksmith told me about one where the cops were standing right behind him while he was picking open a door, the guy inside, who could be seen laying on a recliner, was thought to be dead but "rose from the dead "at the sound of his lock being picked. Scared the crapp out of the locksmith. Has this ever happened to any of you ?

Goes with the territory, unfortunately. I'd heard that a new guy at a lock company I used to work for had a whopper call on his first day: Had to open a bathroom, inside he found a cop who'd shot himself in the head, dead.

I wonder why he locked the door? Doesn't seem to me like dead folks would need much privacy

not found any dead people soo far with what I do, but many of the people that let me fix their doors (teachers I had) a few years after graduating they did die (cancer)
same with a closer rebuilder/door repair guy, I talked with one on skype and he jokingly asked his son (the repairer) if I was his girlfriend, weeks later, the father died of a heart attack!
another instance of this was one guy asked me about how to do a fresh install of a Norton Door Check & Spring (an OLD closer from 1880's) and soon after, the son took over asking questions (in next emails sent to me about same closer question asker)
I later found out that the father died (the man who asked me the initial question on how to install the Norton door check.
I do miss the guys though, the teacher, and the rebuilder's dad and the other one with the old closer question at times.
billdesertholls: I suspect that the guy locked the door to delay emergency services access to saving his life, police officers do go through alot, but it's a shame when one turns his own gun on himself.

A small taste of surrealism for you..... many, many years back I had to open a door into a bathroom. . It was 70 degrees and stifling. An older person in the tub had fallen and drowned. Needless to say it was really bad. .... I sincerely hope no one else happens across such a travesty. I choose to leave out the worst ...
The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.

If you are in the business long, it will happen to you too.
Normally it's a wellfare check where someone has not been seen for a few days at work or their friend or family has not seen or talked to them for a few days. It's a smell you never forget. Vicks Vap-o-rub on the top lip and shoved up each nostril helps.

Had a similar case today. Went to rekey a foreclosure and there was blood stains all over the house. Gives you a wierd feeling.
Nothing is foolproof to a talented fool. Wisdom is not just in determining how to do something, but also includes determining whether it should be done at all.

Yeah those foreclosure rekeys can be really gross sometimes. One of our guys found a dead dog in one.

Well I don't know much about dead people smell, but I had to open a safe in a walk-in closet the former owner put his dying dog in. I hear they both died of cancer but the doggy cr*pped himself to death in this little room and I got to spend a half-hour in there carefully drilling a big amsec gun safe. I was being extra careful not to screw anything up cause I wanted out of there real bad! I remember that my nose just shut-off, I do remember it took awhile for it to work again. Thank G-d I smoked cigs back then and my sense of smell was already messed up from that.

Cigar smoke also helps disperse the smell or at least you don't notice the smell as bad.

Many years ago I had to seal up the estate of a couple who had been murdered a few days prior. Bodies were long gone but everything looked like they stepped out a few hours ago. The only sign something had happened was fingerprint dust stains and some spattered blood on a staircase.

I studied forensic science at uni, only small parts of it were about dead bodies, but when it ever came up with the scenes of crime lecturers you can see the thousand mile stare come across their faces as they remember everything, it's not something I'd ever want want to stumble across, the forensic studies of lock picking though, that that was interesting.
"What if this wasn't a rhetorical question?"
