Assa key systems

Pull up a chair, grab a cold one, and talk about life as a locksmith. Trade stories of good and bad customers, general work day frustrations, any fun projects you worked on recently, or anything else you want to chat about with fellow locksmiths.

Assa key systems

Postby kgagne » 21 Jan 2015 10:20

I was wondering how other locksmiths keep track of their High security key systems and authorization forms. Currently I have them in eight different binders. I have well over 500 customers on high security and looking through binders is time consuming. Is there a computer program out there that will work for this. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

I used to write the key bitting along with the client's name in my little address book & I only bothered doing that cause I didn't have a way to cut medeco keys in my van.
Why do You feel the need to keep track of this info?

You don't install or maintain large systems do you? I'm at a facility with easily a thousand locks, and when our Medeco locksmith comes out, he brings cut keys with him because they keep everything on file as to how our locks are pinned up and can make everything up including additional keys at the shop before they arrive.

How would you cut keys for customers on file if you didnt keep track of their high security system. My customers can call and order a key and when they pick it up it is cut without them having to bring a key in. That is when I check for the signatures on file. I cant see how you can do this without.

I don't restrict sales on keys, although if a client wished me to I guess I would. Currently and since 1990, if someone brings me a key and asks for a copy I make it

Years ago I had a couple of dry cleaner chains using medeco and I just used my lil' address book and wrote down their combination. Then when needed I could bring a set of precut keys and just switch around a couple of tumblers

Any spreadsheet database program will work. It doesn't need to be fancy. We use the same software $10 off of eBay (Lotus Approach) for all our service call entry, and keeping track of restricted or high security systems. You just figure out what fields you want, the length of field etc. and that's it. It is very simple.

You can also use a common office program like Excel. You have to prepare the sheet for each different system of course. But then you can manage each costumer having this system with the same sheet template. Furthermore you can use macros in the future to do advanced searchs, e.g. check for possible cross keying, ...

We deal mostly with Abloy, and 90% of our Abloy customers have signed a card, and all cards are sorted alphabetically, and locked away in a safe.
Larger systems have their own place in another area.

My father is working at putting some of the earlier OAK code cards on an Excel (I believe) spreadsheet.

What is an OAK code card?
