Where to Find Discount Locks

Yesterday I hit up the Goodwill and found Kwikset deadbolts for $2.99 a piece. Where have others found good deals?

The HabiStore is good. It is an outlet for Habitat for Humanity.

Flea markets are great.

I find locks all the time. New and old. Sometimes if you find an old one the vendors price it like it is a lost treasure or something and you are better off walking away. But I have gotten a few good deals too.

If you can, make sure you mention that the locks have no key. I always pick up locks and go, "hey, I got a lock here with no key, I'll give you a quarter." It works most of the time. A lock with no key is just worthless weight these guys have to lug around.

Sometimes antique stores can offer good prices on old locks. Usually they won't have keys and the locks will not have been well cared for but the prices will leave you with enough money to get some WD-40 and rubbing alcohol to clean them up with. Occasionally you may even find a great deal on something rare as some of these places regard the locks they have as knick-knacks not collectibles.

Depends what you want but most locksmiths will give you stuff or look in the trash out back of a locksmith shop. You can also buy old locks and keys for the price of brass or less. We usually sell a 5 gallon bucket of brass cylinders and keys to a local junk guy for about $50, he sorts it and makes a good profit on it.
