How can I open this lock?

Postby ithehappy » 30 Jan 2015 17:31

Hi,
I have been to a lot of forum, all technology related, never in my life I thought that I would visit a lock picking forum, not even in my dream, until now. Today I lost the key to my home's secondary door. My parents were not home, so I went out to grab a beer with my friend and I came back and searched all my pockets and the key was missing! I am not feeling really sad anyway, as the key was a single key and moreover it was not attached with anything, and it was rather small too. Anyway, I had to visit one of our neighbour who holds a spare key, but I was disgusted to go to someone else's house to grab a key of my own home, whatever, that's not the point here. I just want to learn this thing, I don't want to face the situation I have faced today already.

Now the thing is I would like to open that lock. First of all, I do not poses any required tool to pick a lock, all I have is some hair pins and a set of screwdriver set in my home. Would that do?

Now how is the lock? Well I can't say, its a rather cheap lock, that much I can tell. But I found (after a lot of searching) a spare Godrej Nav-Tal 6 levers or some thing in our storage, that's what I want to unlock first. For last one hour I have been watching Youtube videos, they are quite handy, but almost all of them use a professional grade tools, as I said I lack those.

Here is an image of the lock I want to pick. Is it even remotely possible to pick this with whatever I have in my home? The actual lock which's I lost is not anything like this, so I can just assume that it would be much easier to pick.

I am from Calcutta by the way, I mean you can figure out that from the lock type I think, the advanced users. And if I have broken some rules by this post kindly forgive me, as you can guess I am a complete idiot about this! And pardon my language too, I don't speak English at all.

Thanks in advance,
Saurav.

PS: Out of all the Youtube video I watched I found one video which was rather easy, and I actually was able to open the lock of one of my luggage suitcase, LOL, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiTILSpDl_E But I am quite sure there was nothing to learn really, I just twisted the hairpin as shown, and it opened. The type of it is different too, I mean the whole lock spins in that lock, like a separate round portion, don't know if I am making any sense, but that's the best I could tell.

Welcome to LP101. Glad you stopped by. Don't worry about your English. It is quite good.

Let me caution you that picking a lock that is in use is a bad idea. Picking a lock can cause it to break, especially for a beginner. So please don't practice on your house locks. The padlock you pictured is not locking anything, so that is good.

The brass padlock you first mentioned is a lever lock. There are several good threads around the forum that can give you an idea of how a lever lock operates. They can be tricky to open, but you can do it with tools you make. Have picked a number of lever locks, mostly with tools made from things laying around.

If the levers are very thick, bicycle spokes can work. Thinner levers require thinner wires. But the wires need to be strong enough to not bend too easily.

The suitcase lock with 'the round thing that spins around' is what we call a 'pin tumbler' lock. That round part that turns in the middle is called the 'plug'.

There are a number of beginning lock picking threads around the site. Click on the blue "SEARCH" button at the top right of the page, and type in what you want to find.

Good luck!

Gordon

Thanks a lot Gordon for replying.

I just searched with keywords lever lock, but can't find much info :( Could you please redirect me to one of those topic, which will have similarity with the spare lock I have?
