Suggest next lock?

Postby onionz » 1 Feb 2015 6:21

I have 3 Kwikset locks, and a Master Lock #3 which have become very easy to open. My only other lock is a Brinks High Security Brass padlock. It has been a challenge but is getting easier. Can anyone suggest my next lock so I don't buy some junk and waste my limited cash?

A Master Lock #140 (or the plastic coated #141) are a good next step in padlocks, still 4 pins but they include spools and have somewhat tighter tolerances. A Schlage C keyway cylinder or Yale Y1 cylinder are both good next steps for mortice and rim type cylinders which challenge you with more difficult keyway warding and better spools.

As mentioned a Schlage lock can be a good challenge for your skill level

yes schlage is good, especially when you make it one evil lock. to do this, pin it with various security pins and voila, custimizable fun

I got a Schlage C cylinder off Ebay. It should arrive soon. Only $8!

It's a good deal. I'm in the market for practice locks if you need em. I can get you them at 2 dollars a piece. Mostly masterlock, and 10 bucks for a evil lock I have with I made myself with customy pins. Just putting it out there.

Can you post a pic of the "evil" lock?

If you haven't worked with security pins, at least serrated and spools, you might not want to jump right into a "challenge" lock. EG: One full of serrated / spool and other security pins, that may have other "tricky stuff" such as counter milling, threading, extra heavy springs, etc, etc.

If you haven't been thru a Master 140 or 150, go there. When you can handle those easily then move up to something like a Master 911, then into the American 1100 / 5000 series.

For a cheap challenge look at the little Master lockout / tagout locks. I think they are 410 series and have 6 security pins. They are under $10 on Amazon.

Hope this is helpful.
