How to learn to position a pick onto the pin?

Postby pillar » 10 Dec 2014 14:29

I am still a beginner, and I have trouble feeling the pins.
I look into the keyway trying to spot the pins and my pick (hook).

How can I learn better to position the pick onto a pin without looking into the keyway?
Should I put some marks onto my pick? (Actually dont wanna do this)

Do the pros only feel the pins or do they need looking (except keyway with curves)?

I think the goal is to pick a lock blindly....

You don't have to make marks onto your pic.

Without tensioning the lock, set your pick on the first pin. You can see this pin, so this is easy. No close your eyes and get an impression of the felling if you slightly move forward or backward your pick. Now try to place your pick onto the second pin (with closed eyes) and look afterwards if you were correct. Try some time, without tension and looking into the lock, to just feel the pins and depress them. Maybe this helps.

As a beginner, I had also problems with placing the pick on the pin. But later I learned how to fell the important pins. If a pin is not set yet or not binding at all, you will not feel this pin strongly. However, if you accidentally touch this pin, this won't matter (except for high quality locks where all nearly pins are somehow binding at the same time!) at all.

Please also refer to this excellent beginners guide:

I also build up very early my easily repinnable lock. I replaced the retaining pins of each bore with headless screws, so I could easily remove and exchange pins without dismantling the lock or even have to pick it. With such a training lock, you should follow the above mentioned and linked tutorial.

some folks buy a lifter pick which cradles the bottom of each pin and makes positive contact, or you can take a hook pick and file a valley into it to make it a lifter pick.

I normally run my pick down the lock (really slow) as that allows me to feel the pins that are waiting to get picked and the ones that are setting as they are a little harder than the other ones (I am sure there is some other technique that is better but that works for me.) when you manage to feel that bump under any condition locks will open really fast ( I am still noob level but I manage without problems to feel the pins that are setting and go slow ) another trick I found is listening to music in the dark as that deprives you of your other senses ( If anyone here manage to smell that an lock Is opening then I am officially amazed) making your touch more sensitive  (noob tips )
picking your nose and picking a lock are 2 extremely different things only thing they got in common is the satisfaction :P

Always take your time when picking. A lot of bad habits are picked up when you go thru the lock too fast. Try to get a picture of it in your mind. What you feel is what you should be seeing in ur mind. docjon

Here is how I began to learn to feel the pins: I first took my hook pick and jammed it against the front side (visible edge) of the front pin. Then i curved underneath it, getting into the space between the pins and thus when i pressed forward, i knew i was touching the second pin. It's kinda like feeling your way thru a dark room. you go along the edges, so you have a sense of where you are. Hope this helps. Furthermore, I hope my Noob advice doesn't teach some bad habit that experts would advise against. IDK, maybe consult a pro before going on with my advise, just for good measure. cheers!

Its what squelchtone was speaking about. Its for the pin to cradle itself on the pick.
