Help with two S&G 833 (1991) locks with no keys.

Postby BSG_314159 » 25 Feb 2015 9:19

So I have two 833 sergeant and green leaf locks with no keys and I want to get the opened. I just want to know my options for these locks. The medeco cylinders seem gummed up and I can't get a good read when I'm attempting to pick it. I just started lock picking as a hobby and I doubt I will be able to pick these guys open. I really would like to keep the medeco cores intact but I will eventually get two cores with keys. What should or could I use to clean out the medeco cyclinder? Can most experienced lock smiths open a sergeant and green leaf lock without damaging the cyclinder?

Thanks

no, most locksmiths probably can't pick a Medeco, they'll even tell you it's impossible. (We've all had commenters on youtube tell us that our Medeco picking videos are faked or staged or the locks have been doctored up. )

If you are just starting out in picking, then no, you won't pick those open. You have to first understand exactly how the locks work and what the mechanism is doing. New cores and keys are $27 on ebay, which is a steal since they normally retail for $100 per cylinder. So get them before they're gone. oops. I just checked and seems I can't find that seller any more.. but keep an eye out, here's one that sold recently http://www.ebay.com/itm/121565387027 Some folks here may have spare cores to sell you as well.

Use Brake Kleen spray to clean out your padlocks, are they full of mud or dirty old grease? can you post a good close up of your keyway? (upload pics to imgur.com or tinypic.com and copy/paste here)

Your option to open those is get good at picking, get really lucky and open them by accident, or send the locks to one of the many folks here who can pick them for you and mail them back. I trust a handful of folks with consistently opening them, FarmerFreak is one of those folks, but it would be up to him if he wants to take on such a project, and if he would want anything in return for his services.

Buy a Medeco mortise cylinder on ebay and take it apart to learn how it works, then pin in up 1 pin, 2 pins, 3 pins, 4 pins, 5pins, and get good and picking, then add the sidebar with 1 pin, sidebar with 2 pins, etc until you master it. Then go nuts on the 833 padlocks.

I picked my first Medeco two years after getting into this hobby. Your learning curve may be longer or shorter depending on your picking ability.

good luck!

Tee hee.... snort... chuckle... guffaw... howling with laughter...

Uhh, most locksmiths that I know would resort to destructive entry for a Medeco lock. Have met few locksmiths who are skilled enough to pick a Medeco lock. There are some (have not met any here in tucson) professional locksmiths who can pick a Medeco, but they are few and far between.

Your best bet is to get one of the experienced people here to agree to pick it open for you. As for destructive entry without damaging the lock itself (only the core which you are planning to replace anyway), good luck with that, too. This lock is designed to resist destructive entry. It can be done, but not by those not familiar with those locks.

Good luck with the project of getting the locks open. Too bad you don't have any keys for it. Then it would be easy.

Thanks Squelchtone

I have opened over 20 5200 series and same in pacific locks. I have a good understanding of how these locks work and have taken apart my 826c with keys and 951 with keys and checked the pins. My 826 has two mushroom pins and 4 standard pins... I have not played around with mushroom pins yet... I'll stick with my spool pins and serrated pins for now.

My goal is to pick these boys open one day.... Got to start small. I'll stick with American 5200s and pacific us 100g for now.

Thanks for the input guys.... I don't want to destroy the cores.....

I will post some pictures later... I believe it was grease in the key way... When I stuck one of my medeco keys inside (from different locks) it would have lots of black grease. One of the 833 seems really gummed up as the top portion of the lock does not jiggle like a new one will.

I will buy some practice cores and start with one pin and make it to 6... I spend roughly a couple hours a week playing around with these two locks.

You WILL get there if you keep working at it. Progressively pinning a Medeco lock, as described by Squelchtone, is your best bet. They are not unpickable, but most locksmiths do not devote the time to learning to pick them. That is why most locksmiths can not pick a Medeco.
