Book By Deviant Ollam

Member Deviant Ollam has written a book "Practical Lock Picking - A Physical Penetration Tester's Training Guide".

I found it well written and informative and wanted to make the forum aware of its existance. I would highly recommend this book to anyone, beginner or seasoned picker. There's some of the best explaination of basic lock construction and basic picking techniques that I have seen in any of books I've read on lockpicking over the years, and that's more than a few !!

Its easy reading with lots of pictures and detailed explainations. He talks about different types of picks, tension tools and how to employ them. He addresses various attacks, and much more. There are tons of good tips all throughout the book.

If you're just starting out in the hobby you should own this book. It will be some of the best $$ you've ever spent.

JMHO ....

Always good to reminds folks that this book exists, thanks!

here's an old thread that mentions it as well. viewtopic.php?f=8&t=55105&p=400029&hilit=A+Physical+Penetration#p400022

We will be redoing the FAQ area soon, I think a book/tutorials thread or section will be a good thing to put in there, and make it so it is not buried with 2 years of other posts.

Thanks

He wrote an updated edition to PLP (Practical Lock Picking), which is mostly the same, but does have some new material and more color pictures. If you are interested in key based attacks, his book Keys to the Kingdom is hard to beat.

Indeed. Very clear books. 'Keys to the Kingdom' is a great overview of impressioning, bumping and other key based techniques. Very clear. Well worth it.

I passed on the 'Practical Lock Picking' I had, but it's definitely a great book when you start out with locks. Very clear explanations explanations, overviews of kit, but above all, some excellent progressive exercises to build your skill set with single pin picking. If you're also into buying a lock you can progressively pin, you couldn't wish for a better progressive way to learn.

As Gordon mentions, make sure you get the 2012 edition, rather than the 2010 edition.
