security pins (where to get them?)

Postby UnlockingBoredom » 15 Mar 2015 19:26

Hi guys,
Its only my second post here and I tried the search feature but didn't find what I was looking for..
I just started picking locks for fun and something to do as I am disabled and cant do much else most of the time.
I have picked all the locks around me (my bother in law is a general contractor so he brings all of the old deadbolts and door locks home and puts them in big buckets) I have picked them all and then started to re-key them for something else to do and even had to file down a driver pin to get one lock to work with the key.
I have the Wizwazzle (I think that's how you spell it) set from Sparrow along with the auto jigglers (still trying to figure out why I have those) and 6 prybars of different thicknesses

Oops, on to my question...
Where can I find some security pins that I can put into some locks so I can practice picking better locks?
I don't have much money because I am still battling with SSDI and heard it takes years to get it.

I have been searching craigslist for some good locks but there is nothing in my area.

Any help as to where I can get a hold of some security pins would be greatly appreciated

Thank you,

Hi and welcome to the forum!

Check out this thread for an online supply house that has them: http://www.lockpicking101.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=48900&p=410651&hilit=buy+spool+pins#p369594

that thread also shows you how to make your own if you're into Do It Yourself projects.

Hey thanks Sqelchtone... I really like the idea of making my own, thats pretty neat.. I hope my hands can do it though (severe fibromyalgia so every joint in my body feel like its being stabbed with knives)

Again thanks, can you recommend some good locks that would be harder to pick for a beginner? Master is a joke, I have around 30 that I can pick zipping, raking, and SPP. I have a couple yales, slayers and such but nothing challenging

go to Amazon, ebay, or your local locksmith shop at get an American Lock 1105 padlock (I mentioned that model specifically because it has an aluminum body and is light and easy to hold for long periods of time). it has serrated pins on all 10 pins, hours of aggravating fun.

Here are some 1100 series padlocks for $8 with free shipping. Seller has 36 of them

Hello UnlockingBoredom,

You mentioned that your brother in law is a general contractor. Not sure what type of job sites he is on, but if he comes across any extra lock out tag out padlocks they are usually pinned with security pins. Many of these are plastic lock bodies, some even have plastic shackles, but the cylinders and keys are metal.

Thanks, I will have to go through all of his stuff (he is moving it into a new building at the moment so I will have to wait)
As far as him being a contractor, he pretty much does it all from new houses to remodeling old so any old locks (either door or padlocks he gets to bring home) and he brings home old plumbing with lead joints so I get to melt out the lead and cast bullets too!! :)

If you want to cast bullets from lead, can recommend what I did... go to car repair shops and ask for their old lead weights. Most are glad to get rid of them. If they ask why you want them, you can either tell them the truth, or you can fake a twitch in your face and say "I like to lick them. Have ever since I was a kid".

You can get some really great looks from them with that one. 8)

ROFL... Nah, I have enough #2 alloy (over 1,600lbs) and I get the pure when the BIL brings it home... Its enough for me :D

I guess I am going to get some American Locks 1100 and 1200 series to play with.. Picking the Master 1,3 and 5 are BORING!!!
I have a EXCEL lock that I was picking only now and then... but then realized that I only need to depress the 6th pin in and it pops the lock..

I think I will eventually pick up one of those cut away practice locks so I can get the feel of different pins and see what they are doing, I think it would help me to learn security pins...
