Advice for picking a Master 6270/970

Postby mmurczek » 21 Mar 2015 15:47

Hello everyone! I am new to the hobby and art of lock picking and I would greatly appreciate any tips that can be provided. I purchased a lock for $3 off of kijiji that the owner had lost the key for. However I may have purchased a lock too difficult for my skill set. I have had luck picking 5 pin locks but this is a six pin I believe. The lock when I purchased it appeared quite dirty and not well maintained. I cleaned it as best I could and lubricated with some dry graphite. Any advice would be greatly appreciated from some of the more senior lock pickers. Thank you!

Since this is your first post and you are asking about a very specific lock that is usually used on work van doors (it is hockey puck padlock for those not in the know) we ask that you please post a photo of the actual lock so we know it isn't attached to anything.

To post a photo on the forum, upload it first to a photo hosting site such as http://imgur.com , http://tinypic.com , etc, and Copy/Paste the URL address into your reply here.

Thank you,

ahh see that picture clears it all up.. Lloyd sold you a nice lock ;-)

That lock has at least 1 security pin called a spool pin, are you familiar with picking those? When picking it, does the cylinder move a little and then stops around 1 o'clock?

Thanks

Yes! and it gives me an ounce of hope every time, but I am not familiar with spools.

This is a nice video I like to use for demonstrating how spools work

With that master, after you picked it to a false set, which means the spool pin has gotten hung up and the plug moved just a little, then go in with a hook pick keep medium to hard tension on the lock, go under each pin, find the ones that seem really hard to push up but are still stuck hanging low in the keyway, put medium pressure on the wrench and rock the pick to lift that stuck pin, you'll see and feel the plug counter rotating and the wrench pushing back. Let it do that until the spool pin overcomes the lip that it is stuck on and then the plug will turn the correct way and should pop the lock open.

There are some videos on youtube for this lock as well

I opened it! and I now have it disassembled revealing 5 spool pins and one standard pin. No wonder that was so difficult...

Good job picking the lock with 5 spools and for opening it up to learn more about how it works - that is what helps expand your skill and knowledge -Nick
