Try using less tension....its the biggest mistake alot of people make first time.

Follow FC's advice and try using less tension. There is no way for me to tell you how much to use but as a rule of thumb someone starting out at lock picking uses about 10x the required amount. Taking out a couple of pin stacks is a great idea, I would say that it is the best approach to learning how to pick locks.

As for the ball pick, I have one and I have never used it, some people must use them but as far as I'm concerned it can't do anything a standard rake can't do.

ROFL I didn't even notice he hadn't said he had one....I guess I just assumed he would have....wouldn't he?

Coolman: I would suggest re-reading the MIT guide several times, you cant absorb everything in one sitting, and sometimes somethings become clearer after you learn one thing and then reread.

Good luck!

p.s. If you don't have a tensio wrench....you need one :)

I usually use the ball picks to grind them into different shapes. For example... on one of my half-balls i grind in the center of the ball so it looks like a two half-diamonds. Something like below:

Cut about here

Its not the picks, you just haven't developed the skills yet. One you start practicing often your feel and picking skills will increase greatly.

To pick a kwikset i recommend that you use a short hook. Make sure you run the pick over the pins and set the binding pins in oreder. You should get it picked after you work on it a little while.

Good Luck! :D
