How much should i spend on locks?

Postby LinZex » 25 Mar 2015 11:17

How much do you guys spend on a cylinder? I want a cylinder I'm able to repin, simply because it seems more cost efficient to me :D

But how much do you guys pay for a lock? It seems it's gonna be hard to find any locks here in denmark for under 80$, even padlocks rarely dip under 80$, unless i go for used locks which I'm fine with, just don't know where to get them, since almost noone shows interest in locks here, so they are not really sold 2. hand, to my knowledge anyway :?

I have tax money coming back in early April, so I'll buy it brand new if I have to :)

The amount you spend depends on your ressources, and also if you're a collector,
there is however one rule, do not tell your wife how much you really spend on locks! this is a really bad idea.

I just ordered one of mrwizards practice locks.

It's repinable, comes with spools and serrated pins and has seven (?) cylinders you can pin up as you like.

I figured by the time if bought a ton of padlocks etc it will have paid for itself many times over plus my better half is already rolling her eyes at the locks scattering the coffee table:)

Save money and keep the wife happy;)

Once I get better I will probably start buying other locks to play around with but for now it seems like an excellent way to build my skills without breaking the bank.

PM him he's really good to deal with and will ship anywhere as far as I'm aware. ( someone correct me if I'm wrong)

Just my noobish opinion:)

Cheers

Yorkie

P.S search the forum there are lots of reviews regarding his practice lock and some others too.
Society, have mercy on me, I hope your not angry if I disagree.

Ebay!!!

I have bought several cores with keys for under 20 to 30 dollars. Medeco/SFICS.

Probably not supper easy to repin but you can remove the side bar on medeco cylinders and they are just a 6 pin lock. My military medeco cylinders are easy to repin. You can find those for 30 bucks on ebay.

You can find some really great padlocks for way under 80 used that can be repinned. You can get some american locks on ebay for a lot less and those are easy to repin.

Yeah my girlfriend recently saw a box of my locks on the table. I had a receipt for one sitting next to the box, $80 for two abloys. She looks at me and say " $80 just for a box of locks!!!!"
Meanwhile, that $80 paid for just 2 of the 15 or so padlocks in there. So I keep my mouth shut and bought her a new pair of shoes lol. Shes happy and I live to pick another lock!

As you practice and develop your skill it is likely that you will desire specific picking challenges or develop preferences such as padlocks vs door cylinders.

Then there is the issue of basic value- most padlocks have some form basic value but unless a cylinder is something special it has little intrinsic value, this may or may not be important to you.

Depending on your budget and desire on ebay I see everything from the simple surplus or used door cylinders from various common brands routinely available in the $5 range, in small lots I have paid under $3 with key. Padlocks - you could shop for a simple new tag out lock out padlock about $8- $10 or a used SG 951 padlock for up to $1000. and everything in between.

IMHO practice lock get old really quick, I prefer the variety that a selection of different locks offer

Hope this helps some -Nick
