Is This a Re-Branded Abus Padlock?

Postby Syl » 25 Mar 2015 0:12

Bit of an interesting story. We've just moved into a new house and have been moving and cleaning for weeks. A couple days ago, a brand new door showed up in the wall to our backyard. There had been a door there before, and that door had probably been very nice about sixty years ago. So, I e-mailed the landlord to thank her for having the door installed and to ask for a key to the new lock in the new door. Well, apparently they did not have the work done and are very interested in who might have installed this door. My assumption is that one of the business owners whose parking lot is on the other side of the wall was tired of looking at that old door and just took it upon themselves to replace it. Weird? Yes. Interesting? Yes. Creepy? Yeah, a little of that too. We now don't know who has a key to our yard. Anyway, I got permission to screw it to the frame so that no one can come in from the other side. Yeah, they could just jump the wall. Oh well.

Anyway, here's the part where you guys come in. The old door had been secured with a hasp and padlock. Whoever installed this new door just left the hasp hanging on the frame, padlock still attached. So, I asked if I could have it and the landlord said there was never a key for it, so it was "trash" anyway. Not trash for me! I picked that sucker off in about two minutes.

So, here it is. It's branded as "Do it", but also has the markings for an Abus N-55/40. If I was to guess, I'd say it has two spools in it. What do I have here?

It's not difficult to open, though.

looks like a copy to me, abus 55/40 don't have that hole on the side and have a few mushroom pins, did you feel any false set when you picked it?

I believe I did, but as I am a beginner, that was what caused me to believe there were spool pins in it. If I over-lift the second and fourth pins, I can cause the cylinder to rotate to about 1 o'clock before it stops. If I lift those two just right, it seems like pins three and one are usually in about the right spots just from having the pick in there to open it.

Yeah, looks like my abus. There is supposed to be a plug in that hole right? Wonder if that was a manufacturing error.

The plug on the side either fell out or someone yanked it out. They are pressed in after assembly and sanded so they blend in.

Thanks, Jim. I had been wondering how lock manufacturers bore the hole that the locking dogs sit in and slide through. Makes much more sense that they just drill through the side and then plug the hole than the crazy ideas I had been coming up with.

Sounds like you enjoyed your padlock find. I am still trying to work out the new door mystery. Was the old hasp and padlock on your side of the door or your business neighbor's side? How was the new door secured/locked when you discovered it? I assume your back yard side of the wall is a private area accessible only from your property. I enjoy a good mystery as much as lockpicking. -Nick

Yes, it is our private, unshared backyard. The hasp and padlock were on our side of the door. The door frame also has two heavy brackets for a barricade bar to be placed across the door on our side as well. I had a 2x4 in there because the 2x4 was obviously cut for that purpose. Whoever replaced the old door also took the 2x4.

The new door is much nicer and works a lot better than the old one. The hardware they put on it is a locking knob and Kwikset deadbolt with a key on their side and a thumb-turn on our side. It was locked when we discovered it.

The neighbors on the other side of the wall are a couple lawyers offices. Not at all a high-traffic area. There is no reason they would ever need to get into our yard.

Here is the new door. Sorry, I don't have any photos of the old door. The old door was wider. See how they had to use a couple insert boards on either side of the door to make it fit?

Here you can see the hardware on the new door. Also, to the right of the knob is the old hasp that they left hanging on the frame. That's where the padlock was.
