Keyway Identification

Postby Twoply » 2 Nov 2004 19:48

I'm a self teaching hobbyist and have a question for anyone who would help. I've searched the faq's and other archives but how does one find out what kind of blanks he should order to practice with? I have been trying my hand at impressioning and would like to try it out on other locks. But when I search for them, I'm asked for a model number, example being Schlage K, Best E or some other letter. Is there a manual out there for identifying which keyway blanks I want?

I saw a book titled "Comparative Key Blank Listings Book." Is this something that could help? Key Blank Directory maybe?

Thanks

Chuck is on the ball.

The Ilco catalogue is the ticket for key blanks.

Ok, I've decided the one I'm going to try. How does one order these blanks?
Sorry for the dumb question

If you know what Ilco blank you want to purchase, go to the local hardware store that duplicates keys. Tell them which key blank you want to purchase.

If they are not an 'ILCO' dealer, don't fret. I've compiled a cross-reference for all the keys I have in stock. Ilco has a system called the 'EZ' referrence. Almost all keys will cross over to it. Advanced keys will not, ( For some reason, I am not allowed in the advanced forum. )

Here is the link to the thread of the file.

In the "back" of the ilco book are cross reference sections for all the popular makes such as Curtis, EZ, Taylor, etc...

I just looked at my book again, yep, the cross reference is still there.

My main reason for making this list, is that I spent $35 for the Pro-Lok 'key tag system' from FB. After recieving it, I realized this product IS the cross reference of the Ilco book.

Since I do have the book, the cross reference tags were not needed.

Basically, this file covers all the key blank packages offered by FB. There are many keys available via Ilco that I do not have on hand. As I add more keys to my inventory, I will also add them to my list.

Ilco is the product I stock, and the 'EZ' numbering system is an added 'nice' feature.

If anyone wants the Pro-Loc labels.....I am willing to sell. :D
