What did you pick today?

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

This was the lock that started my interest in this hobby. I couldn't get it picked with the improvised tools I had created, but with proper tools it's cake to open. I'm mostly posting this to see if anyone has a guess as to how old the lock is. Otherwise, it's not very interesting. I just picked it open a few times.

Master No. 3 from the bottom of my "junk" toolbox. I think it may have once been my dad's.

The number below "Milwaukee, WS" is difficult to read in this photo. It reads "0512".

Was tooling around with a 2-pin Medeco original, and was getting thwarted by its tough bitting. Grabbed one of my fully pinned Biaxials out of frustration and started rage-picking it. Way too heavy tension, use of rake to rotate pins, etc.; basically everything technically "wrong." But...um...it opened. This is my first 6-pin Medeco; now I have to open it with a little more finesse :D .

I think rage-picking is the only way to pick Medeco, at least that's how I do it. FarmerFreak will tell you SPP and a hook pick work better.

well done!

I picked my first wafer lock today, I got three relatively high quality (if you could call any wafer lock that! :D ) wafer locks and a couple others as a gift from a friend.. they'd been pulled out of service. So I picked all three of the wafers today. I now know what a half-round pick is good for! Worked great on raking/picking the wafers into place. Having never picked one before, I got all three of them open in under 5 minutes.

I also got one of these nasty little things
http://www.abus.com/eng/Commercial-Security/Locking-systems/Complete-assortment/Special-range/Oval-cylinder/357-M-457-M#
that I've been working on. It's much higher quality than the padlocks I've been working on, so I'm trying to attune my tensioning. I can't even get a false set out of this thing! But I'm working on it..

You might be falling into the same trap as me recently with an Abus. I was struggling to pick the thing (wondering why I couldn't even get a false set or any feedback). Turned out there were just 6 standard pins in it. They are well made to tight tolerances so still tough to pick, but if you spend all day trying to get a false set you might never get anywhere! Go back to basics, keep consistent tension and systematically look for binding pins. You may find the same as me that it isn't as tough as you think.

I stopped by my old shop to say hello to the guys and they had three Mul-T-Lock Interactive Padlocks without keys. 1 down 2 to go!

Nice work! Are you going to get them keyed when they are all open?

A trio picked open today.

It's been a while since I've posted anything to this topic, mostly 'cus I haven't picked anything new until recently. But today I decided to pick up a couple of new locks from the hardware store while I was picking up some other items.

First up is an Ace Hardware branded, American lock. The packaging states is has 6-pins for pick resistance, but it turned out to only have 5. Like my other American cylinder locks, I used a Southord large hook for picking duties.

Next up was a warded Master Lock Co. No. 500D. I've never picked a warded lock before, but I recently received a set of warded picks in a grab bag from HackerStickers.com, so I thought I would give it a try. It took me a little while to figure out how to pick this thing, but, once I figured it out, it only took a minute or two:

Last up is a Master Lock Co. No. 15. I was give this lock by someone at work, because they no longer had a key for it. I've had this lock a little over a year or two now, and have never been able to pick it open...until tonight. It turns out that this particular lock required so much tension to open it, that I thought I was going to bend the prybar I was using for tension. Chances are I probably picked it open prior to tonight, but, since it was so hard to turn, I figured it was a false set. I started with a short hook, and, eventually, ended up using my trusty Southord large hook to pick this monster.

They were stock at the shop and when one of the guys took them off the shelf to sell....no keys in the box. When I stopped by to visit they handed them over and said GL  I gave the two I opened back so they can rekey them to sell. Still working on the third. I wish I could rekey them myself because they were always fun.
