another Diebold

So I figured I'd start a new thread for this one even though I started it in another thread.

So I have some friends who live in a log cabin by a lake. It was inherited after an uncle died. He left a safe in the basement and no one has been able to figure out the combo in at least 20 years. I'm sure a big part of that is they don't know how to dial in the combo properly even if they had the right numbers.

So here's the safe

Note the handle next to the dial. If I push down on the handle a little it locks the dial at certain "steps" like something is going into a notch. Otherwise the dial spins freely.

So before even trying to figure out the combo, I was wondering if someone could help me with
A) What's up with the handle? Is that normal?
B) What model of lock do you think it is so I can do some research on it.
C) Any other advice that might be helpful.

Could it be unlocked already but surface rust is making the door stick? does the handle return back to the 6 o'clock position? can you tap it gently with a mallet to see if the handle will go back down? does the dial spin freely?

So the dial spins freely with the handle in the 7:30 o'clock position. When I push it down towards 6 o'clock it only moves a little and locks up the dial. When it locks up the dial it feels like there are definite notches on the dial maybe every 4 or 5 marks.
The handle will not move up at all, other than just a little wiggle.
I was thinking it's possible it's open and just rusted closed, but I would have to use a crowbar to start working it open if that's the case, and that would damage the door if it were actually locked.

Based on some other Diebold photos I have this will be a 4 wheel safe and you should see the wheels.. false gates all the way around on each wheel.

With the handle binding the lock, this sounds like a direct entry safe. Did Diebold make one?

yeah, the pics I saw looked direct, *but* kind of like a Yale OB (Open Bottom) where the bolt was on a gravity pivot, and the handle could be thrown as soon as the lever pivoted up in the gates and the heavy end of it made room for the lever. They used their own in house lock model and also an Eagle model that looked more traditional in arrangement to modern locks where there was a bolt with a lever and nose attached to it and it moved inside the lock case.

The lock depended on thin or thick wall model safes and the L hinges versus tube hinges and finials used could help. I see his has the L shaped hinges and the dial and handle distance was important too, but I couldn't find Z's exact safe in photos.

because of the dial knob and the 100 numbered dial and the hinge blocks i think it may be the k-lock. they also bind but not like the direct entries.
