3 Lever Legge

Postby Torque Armada » 4 Nov 2004 11:45

I just removed an old 3 lever Legge lock from my girlfriends door. She had lost the key years ago and was just using the Yale to secure the house

Anyway, given my new found interest in locks I decided to put a new one in and use the old for research purposes. I was pretty shocked to see it was a really low security model with no curtain, notches and only 3 Levers!!!

Here are some pics for your perusal. Does anybody know what model it is? I can't see any ID numbers on it...

It's not that uncommon to see old 3 lever locks on front and back doors.

You should have been able to see it had no curtain while still in the door! And I don't believe you'll see many old 3 levers like that with anti pick notches, although I have a new 3 lever Asec (identical to Legge) in my van with anti picks. You should be able to pick it with two wires in a minute or two!

Which lock did you replace it with?

it looks like an old legge 2643. and yes its pickable with 2 wires.

the new legge 2643 is white in colour, it has 3 x BS levers with anti pick notches and a security curtain, as assec are legge locks under the assec name , just half price, though the locks are identical, the legge pin and cam picks the lot from 2 to 5 lever and all bs.

legge have done this , so that 1 keyblank is all the locksmith stocks to cut keys for their entire range, the new 2 lever legge has the same case , bolt and levers as the 3 lever and 5 lever and bs range, in future if a customer wants to upgrade from 2 lever to 5 lever legge lock, you just need to fit a new lever pack to the case, or supply 3 extra levers and add cuts to key.

I didn't think to inspect it in-situ so I missed an opportunity to see what it looks like through the keyhole

I replaced it with a generic 5 lever job with a curtain and anti-pick notches that I had been using for research. Not BS though so I'm going to try and get one on Ebay so I can swap it out... Funnily enough I could throw the bolt into locked position using my button wire on that lock, but hadn't been able to open it...

Yes I noticed the Asec 3 lever I have is the same as the 5 lever, the only difference being a spacer between the bolt and the levers in the 3 lever. So you could pop 2 levers in there to make it a 5 lever...

I think I'm going to have to invest in the Legge pin and cam, I'm just not getting on with picking these new Asec/Legge's at the moment.
