I'm interesting in getting started in lockpicking, and I was curious what tools I could make. (Not buy, I'm on a tight budget with all the holiday video games being released)

(I've read around the forum ALOT, but most of the stuff contradicted other stuff I've read, so I'm posting this to get a static standpoint)

Also, on starting locks, I was wondering what was the best type to practice on.

Thanks in advance for helpin' me out.

Oh, if a question I've asked has an obvious link, please link me there instead of explaining it all out for me ^_^

-_-

Yes, I am very familiar with the search option of phpBB forums. They relate keywords that you type in with the information stored on your mySQL database. What they do not tell you, however, is how reliable that information is, and when they give you several different opinions on things, you begin to wonder what's right.

None, in fact. I just came here to find some information about lockpicking, and I posted this to check that the various answers I found were true, and if any differed, ask around why they did so.

But, I've just decided that Google will be my reference on the subject. Feel free to delete this thread.

I appreciate the following things about your posts:

1. the fact that you mentioned that you've searched and havn't found your answer.
2. the fact that you were quite happy to accept a link as an answer instead of demanding answers in this thread.
3. the fact that in your second post you explained some reasons for why you were unable to find a satisfactory answer.

I have a question: if you've found contradictory info elsewhere, what makes you think this thread will conjure up non-contradictory info?

unfortunately, lockpicking is one of those subjects (dare I say "arts") in which there is no right answer. you just need to go and experiment yourself. personally, I'd recommend getting a standard kwikset deadbolt which you can remove the pins from, practice picking with one pin and move up from there.

I also recommend (if you havn't already) reading the MIT guide and downloading Pyro1234321's pick making video - the MIT guide (while far from perfect or comprehensive) is a great primer for the subject, and pryo's video will show you how to make picks out of hacksaw blades. you can use a dremel instead of a grinder, and pyro wrote a sticky that recommends using a tungsten carbide bit instead of a grinding wheel as it removes the spark element. tension wrenches can most easily be made out of windscreen wipers which can be bent without the use of a propane torch as demonstrated in the vid.
Oh look! it's 2016!

I see.

Sorry if I seemed a bit snappish, it is 1:15 am here and I haven't had my expresso yet.

You're right about the contradictory information, what I'm was looking for (and what you have just gave me) was a opinion from another user that would comfirm the search results or FAQ's (Both of which I had previously used).

Thank you, and Chucklz, lets forget my discommoding noob behaviour and start out on a new slate, eh?

(I guess even server admins have their times)

Eh, its been a bad day for me. Sorry. Just keep reading. There are just two things that I know here that are definate 1.) Search 2.) Practice. And I too have not yet had my espresso.

How about we start out with what tools you have.
By tools, in this case I mean shop tools. Basic hand tools, especially files, shop tools such as a grinder of some sort, or even a dremel tool. After you have related these we can move on to the types of tools you can make.

For those truely in a bind, yes you can make a grinder for under $5.00 but it takes some scrounging and some effort. If this is the route you have to go, at least let us know.

Once we know what you have, we can tell you what you need.
