Should I grind down the peterson picks I got on sale?

I got the picks from a store which is being liquidated. Chapter 7 I believe you call it. (Chapter 11 is restructuring, 7 is liquidation - is that so?)

I like to sand the edges down on the carbon steel picks. I have some of the older dipped handle .025 thickness gems and the first thing I do is sand them.

How do you sand them down?
Sand paper? Which number?

I use several different grits of wetordry sandpaper from the auto parts store.

A little feedback:
I do not regret grinding down some of the picks, altough I will try to polish them.
Will have to look through my available tools, I did polishing in school, but with professional equipment I do not have here. (polishing machine, polishing paste and so on)
