Pins popping out - binding order completely different

Postby pillar » 14 May 2015 13:47

I am still practising on an ABUS 55/40 but a problem:

Pin 1 is standard, pin 2 spool. (unknown if serration, do not feel any, but I am a beginner I know only in theory how serrated should feel) Pins 2 to 4 should all be spools.

I apply tension, pin 1 binds.
I press down Pin 1, get fault set.
Pin 2 binds, I press down pin 2, get counter rotation, and when I set pin2 the pin1 pops out again. If I set Pin1 then Pin 2 pops out again.

What am I doing wrong?
Is the binding order completely different? I picked this specific lock a few times and I began in the back with pins 3-5.

Remember: I am still a beginner.

I have a couple of 55/40's and I find both of them get cranky and difficult to open if they have not been recently lubricated. If you haven't already done so, try giving it a little oil and see what happens.

I doubt that you're dealing with a serrated pin in that lock, probably just a couple of mushrooms or spools. Both of my copies seem to have two spools in them.

I think Wizwazzle made a vid about this phenomonen (setting one pin drops another, setting that one drops another) specifically in abus locks. If my memory is not faulty he used the 55/40 as the example in the vid. He calls it "abusitus" and recommended good lubrication, and cleaning if necessary.

The binding order that you experience with a lock can change somewhat depending on variables such as amount of lubrication present, how tension is being applied, amount of tension etc.

Just don't let the lock get you too frustrated. Do whatever you need to (take a break, pick an easier lock for a confidence builder etc) to calm down because once you're annoyed with the lock you will not be at your best.

How much tension are you using? when you set pin 1 is pin 2 the ONLY binding pin? or are you just applying enough pressure to bind more then 1 pin? If you picked it a few times and started from the back, what changed the binding order?

I know what its like to be a new lock picker, it took me a day or so to learn how to pick serrated and serrated spool pins in American locks.

Try applying very light tension, dont set any pins but go from front to back or back to front and see if any or more then one pins bind. If only 1 pin then set that pin and find the next one. But always look for more then one (just in case you set a 2nd and the first one drops, the next time you can set a different pin to see if that works better)

Clean and lube the lock as directed in the post above and keep trying, watch videos and ask questions (after using the search feature first of course)

happy picking..

Try a TrioVing 7 pin cylinder some time. Those trampoline pins! You will be bouncing back and forth for hours.

Yeah...
After practising I probably bound more than one pin.
I guess I will have to get more practice with tension....

But still: (doesnt belong to this topic)
I have less dificulties with the hook than the gem.
Whats so special about the gem? I was told it would be a great pick.

There are similar, but different ways of using the two tools. Both can be used the same way, but there are some methods that are a little easier with one than the other.
