New to Old Locks

Postby Korver15 » 16 May 2015 21:11

So I have been able to pick a variety of new locks quite consistently. However once I try and unlock used padlocks/cylinders I find that I loose all my feel and I can't open what I would think to be an easy pick. I don't have a definitive question but I'm want some tips to improve in this area.

The only thing you said about the locks you were picking is that they were old, so I would guess that you've picked new ones so far? Maybe they need lube. If there isn't much difference between the locks you have and haven't picked, that would make sense.

Is it a standard procedure to lube locks? And yes I have a couple schlages some new some used and the new ones I can feel the clicks but the old it feels like the pick just gets stuck.

For me lubing old locks is a standard procedure. I don't have any really "lock friendly" lubes, so I also make sure to clean them afterwards. I won't really have anything helpful to say about feel though, as I'm not that great and still developing my picking skills

Spray some lube in the keyhole before picking, makes quite a difference
