What did you pick today?

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Very old Corbin push-key padlock. Lock internals were extremely dirty, and it took so much shackle tension that my arm was shaking by the time this opened. Looking to make a key, but the ball bearings may limit my impressioning options.

You can try disassembling the lock to get a better shot at making a key for the lock. It would also allow you to clean the internals better. Perhaps add some lube internally. After 80+ years, it could probably use it.

That would be a good idea, except I wouldn't pound a startip into the cap to unscrew it, as in that link. To avoid damaging it, I ground the end of a 0.25" tool bit square to take it out. Darn, I was hoping my 100th post would be a little better than this. :(

Ah, perfect; didn't see the linked post when I searched. I have a couple good sources for period-correct key blanks (or at least useable cut keys), so with this guide, it looks like an old Corbin's getting a new key :)

Did you mean you grinded it? Nothing with ground electric potential I suppose.

BTW, my 50th post might be better too :D

Yes, I guess that's what I meant. Just for future reference though, the past tense of grind is ground. It's one of those pesky English words that can mean 3 or 4 things depending on context. :)

I consulted my thick English dictionary and I must say you are right. Unfortunately, the f...ing Google Translator (which I consulted before, being unsure of the correct word and being lazy to open a book) has another opinion

P.S. the sentence "I have grinded the end of screwdriver." it translates e.g. to German as "Ich habe das Ende des Schraubendrehers geschliffen" while "I have ground the end of screwdriver" means for him "Ich habe das Ende des Schraubendrehers zu erden".

SPP'd out of the box in about 60 seconds. There is a definite picking style with these Lockwoods (delicate).

I hurt too much to do anything today so I have been sitting around reading most of the day... I finally decided to pick some of locks I have laying around here...

First off: American 5260 (6 pin) American 200 (5 pin) American 5100 (5 pin) American 1205 (6 pin) American 1205 (6 pin) American 1105 (5 pin)
Image

American 700 (6 pin) American 700 (6 pin) American H10 (wafer) 2 American HT-15's (Tubular)
Image

Master 900 (5 pin) Junk Master (4 pin) Pacific Lock U.S. (5 pin)
Image

Abus 83/45 (6 pin) Yale dont know model (6 pin) WB, Best core (6 pin) Schlage Kryptonite (6 pin)
Image

I want to put a Schlage Primus core in the Kryptonite since its an all steel lock.

And the 2 Best locks I still have not been able to pick yet (open or control) gggrrrrrrr
Image

I picked 15 other locks but they were just Master 3, 5 and 15 just to make sure they worked fine before impressioning them, got that done as well..

I was riding my bicycle and saw something familiar on the side of the road. I thought I look at too many lock pictures and now I see them everywhere. Just to be sure I stopped and went back. The lock was still there. I picked it up and put it in my bike basket. As soon as I got home I cleaned it with a rag and some alcohol, then picked it open a few times on both sides. It's an old CISA with four pins, no security pins. I guess it's from the '70.

Cheers :)

Locksmith buddy of mine pulled a Lockwood V7 out of a door today and thought I might like it

Seriously we should all have a mate who is a locksmith! Anyway no key, but since when does that stop us!?

I've never come across any blanks for V7s either...

Received this older (don't know exact vintage) Sargent padlock as part of an eBay lot. Due to rough condition, was a difficult pick, but finally got it open. I'm near-constantly searching for a Sargent Duplex padlock to round out my collection. In the event there aren't keys with that Duplex when I find one, I want to know how to disassemble, so I tore this one apart. Took lots of photos, will post a write up when I get some spare time.

Fully disassembled it, learning a lot about these in the process. Pinned it for a master and change, cut the two keys and reassembled. Yeah, the cuts the two keys share are 121...I've hand-filed a LOT of keys lately, decided to give myself a break :D .
