Clasp wont open

Postby giveen » 27 May 2015 12:00

I talked to my local Y, and they gave me a Master VLine lock that had its key but wouldnt open.

The key turns freely, but the clasp will not spring open. I can push the clasp in a bit and I can pull it a bit, so it feels like the mechanics are free but its not moving beyond that.

Any ideas?

I guess I should state that they gave it to me as I talked to the gym manager about my new hobby and asked if they had any locks they didnt have any keys or ones that weren't quite working.

oh, I thought this was for your gym locker..

insert key, turn the key, hold it turned, and smack the padlock on the concrete, hopefully shackle will pop open. I wouldnt insert my picks into that lock, it's probably not a safe bet.

Thanks, I'll give that a try. I've already lightly tapped with a hammer.

does the lock appear to be damaged in any way: shackle bent or misaligned? rust or corrosion on the body/keyway? it could just be that some joker super glued the mechanism, otherwise you could try applying heat to it while working the key, good luck let us know what you find

If you see any residue that might indicate glue, say super glue or the like,
you can pour fingernail polish remover in and it will dissolve the glue.
work it until smooth operating then flush it out with WD or
the cleaner/lube of your choice.
Just be sure there are no plastic parts in there since it will also dissolve that.
Make sure the nail polish remover is the good kind containing acetone.
Use at your own risk, but I have used it for years to loosen super glued locks.

The times I have seen this, 80% of the time, the shackle is bent.

Couple questions:
Does the key keep turning and turning, or does it stop at about 1/4 turn?
When turning the key, do you feel the spring tension from the locking dogs being retracted?

Does it turn easily to 1/4 turn, or can you feel the spring when you turn it?

It certainly sounds like the shackle is bent. If you look at the gap around the shackle (on both ends of the shackle), does it look like one side is pressed either inwards or outwards?
