Look what remains from the profile on the position of the deepest cut, when you file-off 0.5 mm of the key ridge (less makes no sense):

Easy to break soon...

I wish I could see what you're saying. My computer doesn't allow tinypic, or anywhere else except imgur for that matter.

Tomasfuk has never seen any Challenger blank, Dominion D06, or CCL 1000DA/H/FR, or, to hell with it, you get the point (I hope).

Yes, I have never seen such things, they are not being used in my country.
For the demonstration I just used a simple non-restricted and widely used profile of euro cylinder.

FYI, it's (ASSA Abloy) FAB K32 profile.

I don't exactly get the point here though. :oops: I am not a locksmith, so I'm not so familiar with these blanks, and I looked them up in my catalogue and online, but I still could use some enlightening. It seems that most of the blanks you mentioned have something going on with the shoulders, is that the point?
Maybe a better alternative to shimming or shaving the bottom is removing some of the bottom shoulder. This would at least foil hardware store people, and maybe some locksmiths. For keys that you don't already align at the tip.

They all have small bottom grooves - yet function perfectly fine. In other words, a small groove won't affect the key's strength. Master's 1092C/H, for more examples. Keys nearly always crack and break where the top shoulder meets the blade. That is the area of the key subjected to the most force. Can anyone guess why.....? I'll reveal the answer soon.

I just looked at Challenger H01 and Dominion D06 blank keys and I see no big difference compared to the FAB K32.

Then you would agree that the bottom key groove on all aforementioned blanks is both thin and similar?

I am not sure what means top shoulder and bottom key groove in your posts.
What I was speaking on is top shoulder and top key groove (key positioned as in Europe, i.e., shoulder upwards, cut teeth downwards). When you file-off a substantial part of the top shoulder, the key becomes weaker, especially at the position of the deepest cut.

Alright then I'll put it like this: Bill Phillips method will not reduce the integrity of the key. Multiple examples exist of keyways with bottom groves thinner than the typical residential household key, even considering the alterations he suggested. I'm speaking of the portion of the key that you identified in your picture.

Sure! The integrity of the key will liquidate the user. Bill Phillips method will only help him to do it earlier :D

Let's keep this thread on topic please, I can see it is getting derailed with some side argument about key cutting methods and unscrupulous locksmith tricks. OP is looking for a low cost restricted key system, I'm assuming in the USA, and not home brewed, something off the shelf.

Thanks everyone,

Thanks for all your help guys! I got setup with a GMS MX system! I was looking into Clark's Platinum Keyway as well as the US Lock locksmith keyway but the non schlage specs were a big turn off.

@MBI
The guys at IMLSS are super helpful! ;)

@globallockytoo
That is an interesting key duplication method. I'm sure you are familiar with the angular cuts method too. I should try that sometime, just for fun. I just need to make sure I know the bitting and keep an original, unmodified one.

Thanks again guys!
