Assa Mogul

I am working on a holding cell for Homeland Security after two other "locksmiths" gave up on the job. This one uses a spacer where a #14 Assa cam would normally go. AFAIK they do not make cams to put this cylinder in a Sargent Mogul lock if you are using the longer cylinder with the spacer, at least I can't find anything. Hopefully I am wrong and just not searching correctly.

A previous locksmith took his dremel to the cam, notice the gouges in the housing and whatever he did it no longer works. I am thinking to fabricate a new cam out of an old brass ANSI strike plate using a #14 cam as a template.

Anyone have any experience with this sort of situation?

Best I honestly know is to refab a cam. Best to get good measurements and have a few machined for you (if you fix this you will get called back for others). You can however make one by hand depending on how much spare time you have. If you're not busy right now go for it but as you probably know, don't put off paying jobs to sit with a file in your hand if it makes you less money.

I can whittle one out in about an hour. It will get us more work though from the property manager who handles most outside stuff at our airport and a few other facilities in the state. I am willing to lose a bit to get a foot in the door. I just won't have the lock or cylinder to test it on in my hand so I need it to work first time.

There are 5 other locksmiths and a helper for other jobs so I can work on it between customers and dispatching at the shop. Also useful to talk the boss into buying a milling machine.

Idle curiosity at the moment, but can we possibly see a photo of the original cam you need to fabricate. DHS is building a new facility locally and I would like to be prepared for possible calls.

OK here's a line drawing 1 1/8" Sargent Mogul cam. ASSA says they do not offer cams for the 1 1/2" Mogul cylinder, and Sargent says neither do they. Why only they know. The radius is 1.043" so I should be able to make something.

It's the little things like this which make me wish that I had the money laying around to buy a CNC table/machine. Draw up the file, set up the machine, and crank out a dozen or so.

OK, my cam worked perfectly, I had to thin it slightly but the length was exact.

Me too. We do get a lot of related jobs because we are X09 and X10 certified. It is surprising how many jobs unrelated to the Kaba locks that we get because of this.
