corporate safe specialist replacement locks

Postby padalockwan » 1 Jun 2015 21:27

I have a css safe that was given to me by a local store. (Old owners did not leave the combo so the new owners just bought a new safe)
I now have the combo and was wanting to make a set of keys for it. With a little filling off of the blade an sc1 key blank will work, and I now have a temporary key. But I noticed that when I took the lock apart, the plug looked like it had been filed on and had been poorly repined. Dose anyone know what brand of keyed locks came on this safe?
Or where I can find a replacement?

that is def not a Schlage SC1 keyway so kudos to making something fit into that keyhole. You may get some good luck calling CSS and ordering new cylinders. http://www.fireking.com/safes/products/commercial-safes

I'm going to infer from what you wrote that you can in fact get access to take the cylinders out of the door.. If we saw the format they are (rim, mortise, peanut, and what kind of cam or tailpiece is on the back of the cylinder) we could then tell you where to get something that would fit and work as a replacement.

who knows who worked on those cylinders before you, I believe some of those CSS containers are from Korea and are imports that are not of the highest quality, but still make a perfectly solid drop safe.

any chance of photos of the cylinder removed from the lock maybe next to a ruler or dollar bill or something for size reference?

Thanks

Neither. That is an import cylinder commonly seen on a lot of low cost fire safes. It has been around for many years. I doubt CSS will have anything but you may get lucky. If I remember correctly it is only a cam lock that when spun 360 degrees will block the boltworks. It is definitely not made to common US standards. You can adapt the lockfunction to almost anything locally common you want to use. Best bet is to go to a locksmith and try every blank they have til you find one that will go in. I am sure I have one but cannot remember the number. I will check tomorrow sometime.

Reminds me of an Abus AB20 or ASSA AS3 or AS4 and I see what you mean by 1011d2 on page 53 of the North American keyblank catalog.

If it is import as Raymond mentioned, I wouldnt be surprised if the fit and finish was hand done with files and other rudimentary tools.

I do think it is an ILCO 1636 though...

here you can see where someone filled the plug really bad.

and even one of the pins. I replaced this one.

here is the key i made in front of a blank.

here is the key inserted (not all the way). you can see how much taller the keyway is. but it still works.

Also I was thinking about trying to do some mild restoration (if I don't sale it first). What kind of paint should I use?

I think it is a Kumahira key. I'll check when I get to work tomorrow. No, just checked my notes it is a McGunn which uses the 1636 Ilco as mentioned above.

Thanks, now to see if I can find a replacement.
Still got to check the other lock to see if it was filed also.

Ok, now I have someone asking about buying it.
Anyone got any ideas on what it would be worth as it is? Can't find the same model anywhere online to see what they sale for.
Or would it be worth the time and effort to restore it?
Which would mostly consist of sanding, painting, and replacing the bolt locks.
