any hints on a Master padlock 7052 (spool pins)

Postby _allan_ » 5 Jun 2015 14:19

I've been playing with locks on and off since MIT almost 20+ years
ago (where it was one of the school sports). Finally got a
nice collection of picks/pickgun (and more importantly tension bars)
off CL this month.

A padlock my daughter found on the street is proving
difficult. A Master 7052 with a Schlage core in it.

Any hints? I know it has a least 1 spool pin in it, which I'm
fairly new to. Don't think it has serrated. I had tried
an Abus 83/45 padlock with spool pins I had bought, and
even knowing what the bitting was, had difficulty with it.

I've gone at with the new impact pick gun (which I really don't know
how to use), a bump key, and even tried
impressioning it. I think I'm getting at least 3-4 pins. When
I ease up on tension to push a spool pin up, a couple+ pins drop,
and then I never get to the point where they're binding again
to set.

Incidentally, the new picks helped in one respect. My homemade
street sweeper picks never had much bend, and I got a lock I had
tried before that had a 2 pin in the rear. I was never reaching it,
and was instead oversetting ones in front I had already set that I
thought were binding (because they were the only ones left I thought)

with commercial Schlage it may be a 6 pin (in case you had a 5 pin bump key) and it could also be Everest or Primus model which has extra goodies inside requiring special tools to open.

Can you upload a photo to imgur.com or tinypic.com and show us the padlock and keyway?

Thanks

Was trying to do that earlier, but looks like forum didn't have img host.
Just got a imgur acct.

schlage C keyway.

The abus padlocks came with some extra spool pins. I should probably
rekey another lock with just 1 and then 2 of them to practice before
tackling this one.

Bumping and the pick gun do result in many of the pins getting set. (or overset)

5 pins that I can feel. I suspect it's got a 6th hole
that is empty. I used a sharp probe when trying
to impression (another whole story--not getting marks)
to see if there were any 0 or 1 pins.

Well, good news, it's just a regular schlage. That's a nice find, if you successfully impression it, you will have a nice useable padlock. I don't know any hints about picking spools, but it has been covered here before.

That is a standard Schlage but it is probably commercial grade so the fit will be a bit better than residential stuff. If there is an empty chamber in the rear make sure it is actually empty, it is possible that the 6th pin stack was damaged in some way or that there is some other type of debris in that open chamber which can lead to trouble. a bit of cleaning and lubrication usually helps locks found on the street or in 2nd hand shops.
As for spool pins, there are lots of good threads on that subject elsewhere on this forum and probably some good videos on youtube as well.

The way I pick spools when they go into a deep false set (meaning that it is in the middle of the spool) is to apply slight pressure on the pin with my pick and kind of rock it side to side while slowly letting up on the tension of the tension wrench... They usually pop right up, but sometimes you will drop other pins that you already had set. Thats not a bad thing as they are easy to reset and the lock opens or you find the next pin in the binding order.

Got it open by doing my first impressioning.

1) despite the manual, there were no spool pins. not sure whether
a previous locksmith removed them or what. 5 pins with a 6th empty hole.

2) it was seriously gunked up. after turning cylinder upside down and banging
pins wouldn't even drop out.

3) real problem was probably that it was 8-2 bitting in rear, and I just
wasn't good enough to pick it.

good lock, I master keyed it and put it to use.
