Advice for rekeyable double deadbolt lock....

Asked this question a few years ago and never ended up getting the lock, just because I really wasn't 100% sure what to buy. Finally bought some picks that I'm pretty handy with, but I need a little more challenge than one clear padlock.

People recommended a Kwikset double deadbolt, but NOT the Smart-Key ones. Are all Kwikset locks without Smark-Key "re-key technology" still rekeyable?? This was kinda my issue.

Is there a specific model number I should be looking for?? Like Kwikset 665? Is that what I need?

Kwikset Smartkey doesnt use traditional key and driver pins pushed down by a spring, so that's why we say avoid that mechanism. All other Kwiksets can be taken apart and rekeyed/repinned for picking practice or to rekey to a new key if you are using it on your front door. So get any Kwikset you want as long as it isn't Smartkey with the little slot next to the keyhole.

If you want a challenge, Defiant brand sold at Home Demon or Brinks brand sold at Walmart include some security pins called spool pins which make picking more difficult and exciting. Schlage is a step up in quality from all of these, and the keyway is more difficult to navigate in case you get bored with picking Kwiksets.

I cant tell you how much harder it would be, you have to start picking and get a feel for it. To some people it's easy to some it takes months to master. For additional signs of spool pin behavior, Search the forum and read the hundreds of posts about spool pin picking

Sooo.....

I stopped by Home Depot today to pick up a Defiant deadbolt. I was only able to open it once by raking it for a couple minutes and was unsuccessful after that. So I decided to open it up and just try it with one spool pin and one or two regular pins. But there are ZERO spool pins in this puppy. I even checked both sides just to be sure.

Back to the drawing board.... Guess I'll look for the Brinks @ Walmart??

EDIT: Oh wait... spool pins would actually be on the driver side, which I didn't actually check. Was afraid I wouldn't be able to get them back in easily. Hmm...

OK, so there are 3 spool pins. Spool, regular, spool, regular, spool.

I assume that tweezers are the only way to really re-pin the top pins. Oh well... here goes...
