Key Blade

Bump keys and lock bumping finally have their own area. Discuss making bump keys, proper bumping techniques, and countermeasures here.

Key Blade

Postby x500 » 8 Jun 2015 15:38

I'm hoping I can get someone to troubleshoot my problem here. When I compared my normal key to the bump key, I noticed thate everything was on point except for the blade. On my actual key the blade is wider while the bump key has a narrow/less wider blade and the bump key will not work. Is there some sort of workaround for this? Thanks in advance.

love your disposable email address, that's gonna be hard to memorize

A photo would really help out here. I think I know what you mean but just to be sure, please upload a photo to http://imgur.com/ or http://tinypic.com and share it with us. a photo of the lock you are trying to bump may help us see the keyway better as well.

Which keyway is your bump key, are you certain your lock is 5 pins or could it be 6 and have you ever bumped a lock before? it's not easy and takes proper timing and practice. what are you using as a bump hammer?

and if you have the key to your lock already, why do you need to bump it?

Thank you for the quick reply, here's what I'm talking about. This is a blade:

As you can in this picture here, http://i.imgur.com/ZKljafQ.jpg , the standard key on the left has a wider blade while the one on the right which is the actual bump key does not and I believe this is why the bump key does not work because that's the only difference, or at least in my eyes. The doorknob I'm using is not attached to the door and this is only for practice. I've bumped locks before and very easy actually, but with this key and my doorknob combo, it doesn't seem to work.

The bump key looks as if it is made correctly. It is probably just a technique problem, unless there's something wrong with the lock. The lock may have spool pins, which might throw you off. I couldn't find a thread that explained the principle of bumping really well, but google would probably bring up some good results. Searching here would work too, but you might have to dig a little. I think you will find it helpful to better understand the principle of bumping.
