Is there a major drawback to clamping the shackle?

I do not have a real professional vise but a small vise once used for scroll work.
Some big locks I cannot clamp up on the body. So I am clamping them on the shackle.
Is there a major drawback to clamping the shackle?
Most locks I practice with are ABUS spring loaded on both core and shackle.

The only real drawback is damage to the shackle if you clamp too hard. Simple solution that I use is went to the local hardware store and got some aluminum angle sections and cut the length to the width of the vise jaws. Make two of them, and put one on each side. Then you can clamp the shackle, lock body, key, etcetera without damaging the item being clamped.

These aluminium inserts are a must for clamping the lock body, but padlock shackles use to be much harder than vice clamps, don't they?

Well, the vise I use is really small. About 1-1,5 cm in lenght. So way smaller than the vise bosnianbill is using.
I thought about using some sort of rubber mat, would this be possible too?
Or does it give less feeling of some sort I am not aware of?

Pillar, your gut is telling you something here and you are correct about less feedback. Detecting the type and amount of feedback/counter rotation is harder if you are just holding the shackle because of the play between the shackle and the rest of the padlock. You will get much clearer feedback from the padlock if you put body in the vise. If you are not worried about marring the padlock slightly, just clamp it straight in the jaws... you will hear pins set way better than if you put some rubber in-between.

Your vise is only about 1,5 cm in length? Less than the width of my smallest finger? What is it used for? Making jewelry?
