Use Wink Haus as training lock? Metal ring replacement?

Postby pillar » 3 Jun 2015 2:18

I have a Wink Haus cylinder lock.
I got it from a friend he has locked himself out and the lockman had to remove the lock. So its a half cylinder.

But I have a key and there are some spools in there.
Now I want to train on spools, so I thought about having this lock as training lock with only 2 pins (1 normal 1 spool).
Unfortunately nasty Wink Haus keyway, so maybe not for beginners.

But there is a metal ring at the back holding the cylinder.
Now with disassembly I had to bend this ring. This definitly wont last forever if I want to use it as training lock.

Do you have a suggestion how to change this ring to something different holding the cylinder but is quickly removable without bending to use it as a training lock?

Which pick would you use to get through this keyway?

Probably you can use a Seeger ring. Or an U-shaped retaining clip as shown (3 different pcs you can see in the picture - FAB, Guard, EVVA)

Ask the nearest locksmith...
If it does not fit there - and if the cylinder body has been drilled from bottom (in the European convention), you can knock the stoppers off, cut threads there and cap the holes with screws as you can see in the picture too. Then you will never have to pull the plug out again.

P.S. as the European cylinders mostly use 4.00 mm pin spacing, the M4 screw should fit in there (that is actually in the picture).

I'd probably try short or medium hook for that kind of warding. I pick mostly europian locks and short hook is usully the most used of my picks anyway. Depending on your style, thin versions may help.

I think it is not about what pick you use but how you use it. With curvy warding you often need some manouvering to get the pick from bottom to the pins. Tensioning can affect the choise of pics as well. Often bottom tensioning takes away some room and force you to use different pick than the ones fitting with top tensioning.

What is the easiest way to knock off the stoppers and to not damage the lock?
How are the stoppers kept in place? Glue? Press fitted with heat/cold?

The stoppers are being pressed into the holes. Cylinders which I have measured have had the holes drilled into depth approx. 4 mm with ø 3.45 mm while the stoppers have had ø 3.50 mm.

For removing the stoppers I use:
1 solid vice, clamps with protective aluminium angle bars
1 small hammer
1 steel rod ø 10.0 mm (the cylindrical end of a spiral drill in fact)
2 brass rings fitting into the cylinder (ø 12.98 / 11.0 mm x 10 mm)
2 hardened steel pins ø 3.0 x 8 mm (made from needles for needle roller bearings, ground flat ends without sharp edges)

I put the cylinder into the vice, insert those 2 brass rings into the ends (for protection of the inner surface), insert the stack of 2 pins into the hole (2 mm remain outstanding), insert the steel rod and lever it by hand or knock on it with the hammer. Don't use too much force, you can deform the cylinder.

Another method is to drill a hole (ø 2.1) into the stopper, cut a thread (M2.5) there, and pull the stopper with a screw. Don't use the thread cutter for stopper pulling, you break it then.
