How to open Yale lock?

Postby dstehle » 16 Jun 2015 11:21

Hello,

I have an old Yale deadbolt lock for an exterior door that we have lost the keys for. I am hoping to open the lock without having to having to call an expensive locksmith. The lock can be seen at

Thanks in advance.

Yours,

David

Remove the one-way screws....press the tab and pull the lock away from the door. Turn the cam with a screwdriver to undo the bolts

what global said, using this tool from Home Depot or Amazon or ebay http://www.homedepot.com/p/Prime-Line-Sizes-12-14-Industrial-Grade-One-Way-Screw-Remover-650-7903/203566408

or pull the door hinge pins, swing the door open using the deadbolt as a hinge, and remove the screws holding the locks strike plate to the door frame. Then at least you can use the door and work on the lock as time allows.

I've tried to remove those one way screws...no luck. Any ideas?

I was thinking more about picking the lock. Any thoughts on that?

Thanks,

David

do you have a lock pick set? paper clips and bobby pins only work on crap locks and in the movies.

and did you see my suggestion of removing the hinge pins from the door hinges? and what did you try to remove the one way screws with, did you see the tool I linked that is made to remove them?

You'll probably find it easier to use a center punch and a hammer to unwind the screws a little be knocking on the sloped edge of the screwhead. When turned a little to loosen the screws, use vice grips to grip the head and remove.

Often, one way screws are not over tightened and you can use a strong blade screwdriver to undo the heads a little by pushing hard on the screwdriver handle and turning really slowly (embedding the blade into the slopes).

Some advice if you are not accustomed to drilling metal, use a center punch and sharp drill bits.

And do not sweep the shavings into the garbage using your hands. They will be razor sharp.

Most one-way screws are hardened. If you try to drill a hole in one expect the drill to not start and slide off the screw. Be real careful not to break a bit or stick yourself. Best to use the tricks previously mentioned to unscrew them.

A Dremel with a cut off wheel can turn the ramped face into a slotted screw.

Has anyone tried glueing a shaft to the face of a screw with super glue or 5-minute epoxy?

Screw extractor is more bother than it is worth for this. Just use the proper screwdriver.

The tool Squelchtone referred to is what I have used for a couple of decades now.
By the way, you don't want to call an expensive locksmith ?
