Bi-fold closet lock

Thinking of upgrading your door security? Getting a better deadbolt or padlock? Getting a new frame or better hinges? Not sure what brand or model to go with for your particular application? Need a recommendation? Feel free to ask for advice here!

Bi-fold closet lock

Postby Shangri-laschild » 23 Jun 2015 9:12

I'm trying to find a lock for a double bi-fold closet door. I want one that is just the lock itself and not attached to a handle. The problem is, I need one that can fit a door that is 1-3/4 deep and everything I'm finding is for doors 1-3/8 at most. I'm in the US and probably looking for something below $40 but at this point, I'm open to suggestions even over that. It doesn't need to be any more secure than a regular desk lock. Any ideas?

Hello and thanks for your question.

A photo of your door would really help us visualize what kind of door this is and see how thick the wood is and what the frame looks like. Could you post a photo of the door fully closed, and one of the bi-folds slightly folded open? you can upload photos to http://imgur.com or http://tinypic.com and paste the links in your reply.

Thanks,

The only one I know of:
http://kvdoorhardware.com/wp-content/up ... 4_0113.pdf

You may be able to counterbore the hole (say 1/2 way through) with a larger hole on the outside to be able to work the key. If done carefully and finished, it shouldn't look bad. Be aware these aren't very strong.

you dont mean a bypass door do you?

Something like this would work

otherwise i sell a pocket door lock here in the USA (designed for 1-3/8 doors) that will fit a 1-3/ door with modification. You could use it on a bifold door.

PM me for a link.

Sounds like the 1-3/8 locks will probably be my best bet

Seconded.

Cledry has the right idea here.

I have seen Adam Rite hook deadbolts adapted to doors like this.

It will not be very secure though, those doors are not known for their strength.

In that case why not just use the lock dll932 suggested? Whole lot less work

I have installed those for people as "argument settlers." For instance, mom does not want daughter borrowing cloths. That's about what they're good for, not for applications that need a lot of strength.

Hollow closet doors that can be 'walked through' don't need much security

As in, any lock installed on doors such as those would serve only as a tamper evident closure.

You get people in offices sometimes want to be able to keep their stuff somewhere that no one else can get at without causing damage. It only keeps honest people honest.

Exactly, because dll932's lock can be easily picked.
In the past I have used the zeiss-ikon hook-bolt with 4-way key in cases where pick resistance was needed
But for cases calling for extremely ugly installations why not try the Octopod, which has been sold under like 4 other names,
cause apparently the company keeps going out of business, seems a real glutton for punishment.

That's true. I assumed they were solid like the ones in my homes.

I doubt that one plastic hanger could support a solid door
