To answer your question, yes, pick guns work on locks that are mounted upside down, but "upside down" means different things in the US, UK, and Europe. in the USA the pins are at 12 oclock, in Europe the pins and springs are at 6 oclock. I believe UK rim cylinders are mounted at 12 oclock, but euro profile upvc door cylinders have the pins at 6 oclock. You're in the UK, but a photo of your lock would really help us give you the correct answer, you can upload it to tinypic.com or imgur.com and paste it here.
There are pick guns made for locks where the pins are at 12 oclock, and there are pick guns made for pins at 6 oclock, or you can just hold a regular pick gun upside down while pulling the trigger.
