Open an old safe

Postby dnar » 14 Jul 2015 22:22

I just bought a house in what used to be a very active gold and silver mining area. The house was built in 1872 and has a back room full of mining equipment as I cleared the room I uncovered a safe with a Sargent & Greenleaf lock. I can't find anyone that even knew it was there let alone the combination. The lock has patent dates from 1860 to1877 the last one is a 7 year extension. If it matters the safe is 54.5" tall including 8" casters, 40.5" wide, and 30" deep with double doors it has also sunk into the floor so it's on a 3.5 degree tilt to the left. It started out in Montana and ended up here in Colorado with the house built around it (there are no windows or doors it will fit thru). Is there a way to reset the combo from the out side or open it without any damage? I would like to donate it to the local mining museum in one piece next year. Any help anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You

Resetting the combination will require opening the safe first. It will not be easy, especially if you have never manipulated a safe before.

Pictures will help in two respects:

1. Pictures of the entire safe front, close up shots of the dial, handle(s), hinges, casters can help positively identify the safe.

2. The above pictures will also get us excited. We love pics. The more people who drool, the more likely someone may be to show up and help manipulate it. ;)

What does the dial feel like when you turn it? Does the dial feel different when dialed in one direction as opposed to the other direction? Does the handle move at all? Can you ship it to Squelchtone freight-paid so he can add it to his collection?
