Organizing Locks

Postby l0cker » 15 Jul 2015 1:25

I'm curious as to how everyone here organizes their locks. I saw in a show called, 'Elementary' where they organize padlocks on a metal rack, such as this:

Image

Not the greatest image, I know. But in the background you can see the metal racks where he stores his padlocks. I thought that was clever.

I just received my first picks + practice locks tonight. I already picked my first 5-pin lock tonight. Twice! Kind of exciting.

I was curious though. Does anyone have any methods for how they store lock cylinders? Are there any clever tricks you use to set them all up individually on some sort of wall unit so you can pick them anytime?

I also made a second purchase and bought a vise that swivels so I can pick my cylinders "hands-free". I thought this would help while learning.

But how does everyone store their locks? Please note any type of locks you store and use. I am new here and still learning about the lock picking world. I'd like to see how everyone utilizes their own locks and how they store them for use, and or later use.

Thanks!

I wish I had more space to be super organized :( For the time being, storage bins hold all my locks. The bins are separated into a few categories. Padlocks, Old locks, rim/mortise cylinders, and high security locks. One day when I get my man cave I want to have something nicer (keep dreaming  ).

there was a thread like this about 4 or 6 months ago ( I think)
I wish I had room for a cage of some kind to keep my locks but for the time being I use there, they are $3 at Dollarrama (a Dollar store here in Canada)

now I just need to make a shelving system to hold all of these containers :)

I use bolt bins from the hardware store:

Floor to ceiling shelves with bins for each brand of mortise cylinder, separate ones for mortise, IC, KIK, rim. Then other shelves for each colour and function of knob, lever, deadbolt further divided by grades. Padlocks stored in bulk packs usually keep a dozen of each size and style Abus, American and Master with emDKay, LSDA, Corbin stocked in 48 quantities. Cam locks are separated by length and finish, wafer or pin tumbler. File cabinet and desk locks and office plugs sorted and stored by brand name....

Or were you just interested in the hobby end of things?

Oh, cool! Thanks for replying, guys! These are all great ideas. I love seeing how you guys store everything. I'm a pretty typical A-type personality, so things need to be organized a certain way for me. When my collection grows I'll post as to how I store things with photos also.

And sorry. I searched the forum, but I never saw the older thread. That's why I posted this one here.

No, cledry! This is great information. Thanks for sharing it with me. I was just curious as to how everyone stored their gear and if you had any ideas that I could build on. Currently I am just a hobbyist, and a real amateur at that, but I'm learning every day. Eventually I'd like to start hitting up cons, and possibly even become a licensed locksmith. Although, I apparently don't need to be licensed in Ontario here!

Do you have any photos of your storage units you could share, cledry?

And keep the replies and photos coming! I enjoy viewing and reading them!
