You could always go to your local Harbor Freight and pick up a more powerful motor and pulley... Im sure that there is a way to get it hooked up long enough to cut a steel flat key.. Just my .02

HPC Mini Speedex has 1/10 hp motor.
This set http://mysecuritypro.com/ilco27xkit.aspx is intended for Ilco Mini-Mite to cut flat steel keys - this machine has 1/15 hp motor.
I hope the kit can be used with Mini Speedex too (maybe with a little modified tracer).

hpc tech support informed me that the mini speedex is not capable of cutting steel keys because it isn't powerful enough, while that may not entirely be accurate, i dont think it is a practical idea because it will ultimately destroy the speedex. so instead ive manned up and purchased a premier speedex which is oddly a worse key machine than the power speedex.

I never heard of 'the premier speedex', but it always sounds exciting when you get a new machine. Don't forget to oil the cutter spindle, I know the
last speedex I bought had a screw in the spindle oil hole, as if it would never need oil. After about 6 months it was all loose and out of adjustment.
Anyhow don't make my mistake, I'll take having some messy oil around any day over buying new spindle bushings and a new spindle & repairing the machine

I have never liked any of the Speedex machines.
