That is a tough choice, I wouldn't buy a new machine just to cut 30 steel keys. How much can you make on them anyhow?
One nice thing about a flat steel key is they don't demand the highest accuracy. Many times an older machine that is too
worn to cut brass keys to a 3rd gen can be used as a steel cutter. If you have an older machine, why not just turn around the
copy dog and buy a blade with the same thickness?

You can convert almost any standard manual key machine to a flat steel machine. All you have to do is put on a slotter blade and a new or adapted guide that is thinned down to the same thickness as the slotter. When put together just calibrate it and start cutting. Just look around for old machines not in use and consider converting them. The machine will not actually be permanently changed and can be put back into use as a normal duplicator later.

Before buying the slotter blade you should probably determine what maximum width slotter will fit into the keys you need to duplicate. A too wide slotter will make a mess of the duplicate keys and not be accurate.

Good old machines include old HPC Speedex, Ilcos, Cole, National, Curtis, Foley-Belsaw, Mancuna, etc, etc.
Nothing is foolproof to a talented fool. Wisdom is not just in determining how to do something, but also includes determining whether it should be done at all.

i went and bought a new key machine anyways. ended up going with a premier speedex, i got that with a slotter blade accessory for around $520. i ended up getting an account with a place that fires people left and right and are always losing/needing more depository safe flat keys. after this job with the service call, them wanting me to pull a depository safe lock, wanting over 30 keys, it should easily pay for my machine. if anything, it just means i have another key machine should my mini speedex crap out and now maybe i can throw the mini speedex in my van and leave the premier speedex at the shop and cut both flat keys and regular keys on the premier. i also got an old rytan i need to figure out how to get working and it will give me more versatility as the rytan has medeco angle cutting duplication capabilities.

Did you figure out how much you'll be charging for your safety deposit (flat steel) keys?
I haven't cut one in years, but I think they gotta be worth $7.50 by now?

Victory,

Whats wrong with your Rytan? symptoms? etc.. I take it you have the RY256 since you said it has Medeco cutting ability.
Maybe I can help you in your fixing of it.. :D I do love to fix things but I also like to assist people fixing their own.

the issue with the rytan is it is missing a power cord. also, it is a 12v version so it is designed to work with a cigarette lighter, however, i have a legit power inverter for my van so i dont see much point in having it and i fear using a regular power cord without say for instances cannibalizing a laptop step down transformer so i dont burn the thing out.

a little over 200.00 for a new 110v motor from Rytan..

I was thinking of getting the RY200 Carriage Assembly with 4-way Jaw for mine.. I love the Rytan, it has the most powerful motor from what I hear and a bigger cutting wheel to cut down on the amount of rounding at the bottom of the pin seating area (lol, I still dont know what to call it..)

If any wire is still sticking out then you can just use 14 gauge wire and make another plug

If you were thinking of a machine for flat keys then the Rytan is a great one for doing them. They have a kit for it to do flat keys and there is no way it would ever bog down the Rytan motor.

Wish I had money to buy it from you... I love fixing stuff

What for a few feet of wire and an inline fuse, I'm sure it's all worth at least $3.75

Let's say $5.
Sure the terminals are gold plated, wire insulation heavy duty and heat resistant :D
