Missing detent?

Postby b_LockHead » 20 Jul 2015 20:11

Not sure what kind of lock this is, but I took it apart to lube it and then when I put it back together I couldn't find a way to get the handle to snap on again. Is there a piece (detent?) missing? See photo http://1drv.ms/1fiikzZ.
If it's missing can I buy a replacement?

If you took it off it will go back on the same way. Note that the hole for the retainer is 15 degrees down. This means you have to rotate the inner part of the knob the same amount to see the retainer. If you take the knob back off and look into the side you will probably see the retainer. Also remember that the retainer probably will not go in unless the key is in and turned as the tailpiece blocks the retainer. (there are a few exceptions)
Nothing is foolproof to a talented fool. Wisdom is not just in determining how to do something, but also includes determining whether it should be done at all.

In the past I have seen the detent (retainer) actually push all the way into the square hole and wind up stuck, on the inside. If that happens,
you'll need something thin enough to push it back into that square hole again, from the inside out, before the knob will stay retained in place.

I found the retainer inside but it seemed to be broken as I couldn't' get it back into place. Bought a new lock.... thanks for the info guys.

Dont you have to turn the key to get it to fit back into place? All the ones I have messed with I had to turn the key to put it back together.

This one is a defiant type import lock, you only need the key for a schlage type knob
