This is my first question I have posted. The site has answered a lot of them, but I couldn't find an answer to this one with the search function. I know that sometimes people miss the threads that answer their questions, so if I made a mistake I would love a little direction on where to find the answers to the questions below. I am a new user, but I have used this site for a bit as a lurker, and the search usually lets me find the thread.
Anyway (sorry for the rambling noob apology)
I was thinking of trying to make some security pins. Not really to use on my locks in use but to experiment with for rekeying my practice locks. I am not a locksmith, not sure if I should even be able to buy pins. I would eventually like to make keys that fit these locks, but I just want to make sure that this is all legal before getting too invested. Thought it might be fun!
If anyone can offer some do's and don'ts that would be great. Classic mistakes. What are the easiest type of security pins to make? Should I have a key made to make sure the lock turns and functions or can I wait on that a little longer?
My thought was that I struggle with security pins some times, but sometimes I can feel them with the feed back. I was thinking that making some might give me a deeper insight into how they work, just like taking apart a lock helps to understand it.
Please be gentle.
