Abus Granit 37/55 vs. Mul-T-Lock G-55P 7x7

Thinking of upgrading your door security? Getting a better deadbolt or padlock? Getting a new frame or better hinges? Not sure what brand or model to go with for your particular application? Need a recommendation? Feel free to ask for advice here!

Abus Granit 37/55 vs. Mul-T-Lock G-55P 7x7

Postby tubazoltan » 5 Aug 2015 8:08

Hi all,

I am a complete novice regarding padlocks, although I have done some research on the internet during the past few days.

My choice for a padlock for locking up my bicycle with a 10mm Kryptonite chain narrowed down to Abus Granit 37/55 and Mul-T-Lock G-55P 7x7 (or maybe not 7x7, but one of the other key versions). To me both seem equally hard to pick, so the only question that remains is whether I should go for the slightly thicker 11mm shackle on tha Granit, or for the 10mm shackle with a closed shackle ont the G-55P.

Any advice on this generally? Is a thinner, but closed shackle padlock always better (against mechanical attacks) than a thicker, but unprotected one?

Thank you for you answers.

Could you get the abus 37/60? It's the same size just with a shrouded shackle.

The Abus 37/60 is even more expensive.

Mul-T-Lock G-55P is about half the price of the Abus 37/55, this is exactly what made me think - is the cheaper, closed shackle one "better" than the more expensive, open shackle padlock?

It's hard to say which is the best, but if cost is important, I think the mul t lock will be just fine. I think it's kinda unnecessary to have a shackle thicker than your chain.

So you are saying the Mul-T-lock is not as "good" as the Abus (but in this particular case it will suffice because of the chain's parameters)?

Does anybody else have a take on this?

Actually, I don't want to overcomplicate this: let's take everything else out of the equation: price, chain, etc.

I can choose either one: Which one shall I choose?

I'd say the Abus if you do no think someone can get the decoder tool to pick it quickly: https://www.lockpicking101.com/viewtopi ... 10&t=48462

or if you get the Mul-t-Lock, not in 7x7 Garrison, ONLY Interactive or MT5+ version.

Even better would be an Abloy PL 330 padlock with Protec cylinder.

Thank you for sharing your opinion with me. I am not concerned about it being picked, much more so about someone going at it with a bolt cutter - and these are the two options available in Hungary with a sensible price.

For everybody's interest: I chose the G-55P in the end. As I had no other authentic source, I asked a locksmith who sells both - she said she would herself choose the G-55P because the shackle protection is such a big plus, and Abus for some reason is usally only bought by companies.

So thanks to everybody who tried helping.
