UK 'Yale' 5 pin tumbler doorlock

Postby foto-flame » 7 Nov 2004 14:18

hi guys,

my first post so excuse the noobishness if i posted it in the wrong section.

-your standard UK Yale Frontdoor (see pictures at the bottom of the post)-

i can pick it, thats not a prob - have a hand held one that i play about on but i thought i'd try it on my actual door (same kind); lock picked fine, cyl rotated like halfway round (cw) and then stopped - now, this would be where the actual door should click open but it didn't. i put a fair bit of torque on the tensioner but it was going nowhere. i notice when i put the key in it needs a mighty pull to turn it all the way.

is that all the problem is? just more power needed? or am i missing something.

now for the pics.

hi,
when the cylinder is in the door it does have the latch to pull back so it definatley takes a little more turning. it could also be not quite in correctly in as much as the long loose bit at the back of the cylinder could be too long ... you sometimes have to cut them to size.

Ok first up did it work fine before you started picking it ? Did the key feel stiff before you removed it ? Have you lined up the the inside slot of the deadbolt where the tail piece of the cylinder sits so that it operates the deadbolt feature of this lock ok ? Its most likley that if you turned it the other way the lock would open ok but if not try checking the length of the tail piece as it may be tight against the back of the deadlock case.

Sounds like the lock is fitted incorrectly, either the tail is too long or the bolt is bent perhaps.

thanks.

Yea it was working fine before and after picking it. When the key is in i can turn it all the way to the end (like i can after picking it) and it has a smooth action. It just stops at the end (as you'd expect) and takes a little bit of pressure to click it open with the key. However with the wrench it feels like its gonna break off. Key doesn't really feel stiff when removing it.

- This thing is my actual front door lock, i haven't ever opened it up and modified it - would that be a possible problem even tho it opens fine with the key?

some of those yales can actually move the latch back a bit even in the deadlocked position thats why i asked. Have you flushed out the lock with anything to see if that helps ? Once its picked sometimes i use a screw driver to turn them as it saves me bending my wrench with stiff locks.

just tried some lube on the lock, seems to have improved the action a bit. I'll have to leave repicking it until the morning but i'll def' give the screwdriver a go - can't spare the wrenches.

thanks again,

yea that seemed to do the trick! even with the screwdriver it needed a lot of pressure for it to finally click but it got the job done.
thanks for your help guys.
