Don't buy a new lock and then throw your broken garbage in the box and return it to the hardware store.

I know that Kwikset's selling new product today that advertises a "100% lifetime guarantee" for the original purchaser -- and that suggests a level of quality they should be willing to stand behind -- but, ultimately, none of us are entitled to more than the warranty offered on the original product. If I see a new Ford that comes with a 10-year engine warranty... that wouldn't make it right for me to try to fool the dealer by buying a new pickup and then "returning" a six-year-old, second-hand truck with a broken engine. (For me, that's not "attitude".)
If it's under warranty, then it should be dealt with under warranty... otherwise, buy a new lock. It's not right to create a situation where your local hardware store gets stuck with the cost, just because you think Kwikset's warranty should be different.
