Serated Bottom pins - where to buy?

Postby pcm81 » 2 Aug 2015 9:59

Good morning (well, it's morning here and now).

I am a total newb at locksmithing; its only a hobby of mine. Been messing with re-keying and picking an schlage dexter cylinder. I found some nice pin kits by schlage and LAB for bottom pins as well as some security top pins; but i seem to be unable to find anywhere a security bottom pins. I see pictures on google, so i know they exist, but i cant find any vendor for them. Is there such a thing as a universal 0.005 or 0.003 security bottom pin set? I realize that usually bottom pin does not provide too much additional pick resistance, since real sheer line will be encountered prior to bottom pin being overset; but i figured a serrated bottom pin that is overset will be harder to deal with, hence marginal addition to pick resistance is added still. I see videos on youtube with spool and serrated bottom pins; so, i know they exist; but where to find them?

Thanks ahead.

theoretically they work but with manufacturing tolerances, it sounds to me like a terrible idea to have serrated bottom pins. seems to me like it would just make the lock crunchy as hell to operate with an actual working key, let alone actual picking. if you have trouble finding serrated bottom pins, most likely nobody manufacturers them and you in fact must manufacture them yourself, take a super fine file to add a few notches or if you have amazing dremel skills, that can work too.

You will find the odd manufacture that uses them in their locks... best example is American Lock.. save the shortest 2 key pins, the rest have serrations. But i don't know of any universal pins that have them. Just as VL says, they are not that great for a functioning lock, however much pickers would like them in challenge locks. It might be a case of doing some research and finding out where you can purchase OEM pins from that have this feature. Or better yet, just use a Dremel with the 3 jaw chuck on it and make your own.
