Mike out a couple of blanks to see if they're equal height. Put one in each vise. Without turning the motor on, let the vises down on the tracer and wheel. Turn the wheel pulley slowly by hand and see what marks you get. Since the wheels don't mount perfectly concentric, it'll probably touch on one side of the wheel but not the other. It should make the slightest mark, just enough to indicate the wheel is touching. Check at both ends of the blank and the middle. Brush out the vises first to get rid of any swarf in the bottoms before you put the blanks in. Adjust as needed. Hope this helps.

For the shop we like to make sure the machine will cut a third generation key. Once the machine is cutting about half-way thru the blank, we take a new
schlage deadbolt out, and copy the key that comes with it. Now copy the copy and copy that copy. When all 3 generations work your machine is accurately adjusted
it is easy to match up the first and the last gen keys and see exactly what is wrong with the machine's adjustment

I don't like these machines, they just feel a bit lightweight, and it is easy to cut a bad key if you don't take your time, but I rebuild and calibrate a lot of them for various hotels in the area. I actually did one today. They had snapped the adjusting dial screw inside the casting. We repair so many that I had the parts on hand. The machine was also noisier than usual so I adjusted the motor angle and pulleys and it sounded like new. The ease of calibration is the only thing I like about these machines. Take the blanks as above and adjust accordingly, make sure it grazes the key equally on both ends. Then test. I use American padlocks to test as they are fairly precise. The one I did today was still usable after 4 generations, I stopped at this point as I could tell the next generation would work albeit not very well.
