Best J SFIC picked to control and keys made!

Postby thecrazylockkid » 4 Sep 2015 2:02

Hey guys! I just finished recovering from my second eye surgery, and am picking locks and doing stuff with locks again :D!

So around four years ago, I went to a local locksmith store, and saw two used Best SFIC locks still in their housings without keys. So, of course, being a lock collector, I went inside the store and asked him (the locksmith) if he would be willing to sell/give them to me. Then, he looked at me funny, and said: "These locks have no keys! What would you want them for anway?" Of course, I was expecting this question, since I was only eleven at the time (What kind of kid would want two old locks without keys lol :?" . So, I told him that I'm a lock collector, and I know how to key up and make keys for, and explained to him how I would make keys to them. So after all the talk with the locksmith (which was quite enjoyable, actually :D), he gave me the locks and told me to have fun with them. So, around a year later, when I finally got the time and the right equipment, I made keys for them! Here's how I did it step by step with links to the pictures:

Both of these locks were keyed alike (They were both stamped with the key codes "BD1-5"), so that's why I was incredibly lucky to get this set!

First, I took one of the locks, and picked the lock to control :D

Next, I carefully disassembled the core with a capping block

Then, to make the operating key, I removed removed the plug from the core and put the key blank in the lock's plug as well as the key pins. (This was a slightly newer Best lock, that's why is has a c-clip on the back)

Notice the pins sticking up? The next step is to cut the key until all of the pins align with the shear line. To do this, I used my set of Best A2 Depth and Space keys, and cut the key using my new Wenxing W100A2 key machine. Here's what the plug should look like after all the cuts have been properly made:

Then, once the operating key has been made, you can duplicate as many of them as you need.
Here's the properly cut key working in the other lock (It was keyed alike to the lock I took apart):

Next, to make the control key, you must remove the control sleeve from the core and put the master pins inside of it. (Keep the key pins inside the plug, and do not put the driver pins inside yet)

Notice how the pins stick up here again? Cut the key blank down progressively using Depth and Space keys until the pins line up with the shear line again.

After all the pins align with the key, you may now re-assemble the lock. To do this, you must remove the master pins in the order you put them in, and then remove the control sleeve from the plug. (Sorry, I forgot to take pictures of this process  )

Next, put the control sleeve in the lock first, then the plug, and the pins in the right order as well as the springs. Once the lock has been re-assembled properly, you may re-cap the core.

Here's a picture of what my control key looks like when it works properly in the core.

Finally, copy as many of these keys as you need, and replace the core in the housing! Here's a picture of the final product: (Both locks that were keyed alike are next to each other)

Have fun on your project!

How did the section change from J to K?

I guess that's one way to do it. I just gut the core and decode it, put the pin measurements into a spreadsheet, then have keys punched.

Well not everyone has a punch or calipers. It seems like a good write up on how to make best keys given the equipment. 8)

Hey Wayne,

When you're talking about the J and K section, are you talking about the keyways?

Thanks for reading!

Cool Stuff! I think I saw your video on that a while back. The only problem was that I don't have a key punch, and someone else was using the caliper at the moment :x . So, I just decided to go about this the way I would on a standard pin tumbler lock. But thanks for sharing your way of going about this!

Yes, Best refers to them as sections.

Oh! I didn't change the sections, I just found that interestingly enough, a JMA J key blank will fit in to a Best K keyway lock and a JMA K key blank will fit into Best J keyway lock lol... :?

This method would only work with the newest cores that have a C clip on the back. Anything older has the cap actually riveted to the back of the plug so you cannot remove it.

You're absolutely right! I have some older Best cores that I keyed up earlier that had rivets on the back. For those ones, I either measure the pins with a caliper and cut the keys using D&S keys on my machine, or I just re-key them with my A2 pinning kit. :D

I think you did an awesome job with the tools you had... I have 20 or so Best cores with the C clip that I need to do this to, I just dont have the time right now.. Getting ready to move to Oregon in less then 2 weeks.

Was both disassembling the core and reassembling it done with the caping block?

It looks like that is what he did. Just used the pin ejector tool and the capping block to gut the cores.
