File is this any good

A skill known and practiced for years by seasoned locksmiths, impressioning a working key from a blank is a popular new addition in locksport circles everywhere. Get your blanks and Pippin files and get busy!

File is this any good

Postby nay27uk » 9 Sep 2015 18:52

Hi all second post here and decided before I ruin any more blanks that I will try and get the right file for the job.

I see on youtube and other places regarding Impressioning that a Number 4 cut round or pipin swis file is the best to use.

I have found THESE on ebay and want your opinions, select Round from the first dropdown box and then 4 (fine) from the second dropdown box.

Thanks in advance I just don't want to buy something crap but that price is about my budget at the moment

The Warding file is very coarse and none of those needle files is really what you need to begin impressioning keys
why not get a 6" #4 cut round file. My favorite is Grobet, it won't let you down unless you drop it

+1 on the 6" #4 Swiss Cut file. I prefer the pipin file, but the round file works well, too.

Those are the same kind of generic jewelers files I got to start out. They work well enough for me, BUT I've honestly only had the patience to impression one key correctly and countless ones that wouldn't work.

Try searching for Grobet --just because they are in swiss land doesn't make their product be swiss files

It does not mean that it is made in Switzerland (though Grobet is). Swiss Cut is the pattern in which the file is cut. There are many different file cut patterns such as mill cut, bastard cut, and so forth.

The number ( #2 and #4 Swiss cut being the most common Swiss Cut numbers) is like sandpaper grades... the larger the number, the finer the finish. The number 4 leaves an almost mirror finish, but the flip side is that it cuts slower since it takes less material off with each sweep of the file. A number 2 cuts faster, but leaves a rougher surface. Some who impression competitively instead of just hobby impressioning say the rougher surface is easier to read.

Additionally, there are different locations on the file that cut. A flat file can have the cutting surfaces only on the flat sides, the edges (as in a warding file), or on both.

Most of the time that I get for impressioning is when things are slow at work. Being a mechanic by trade, I have files that are less-than-Grobet quality at work. (I don't take my Grobet to work, since if it fell, the tip might break off). Have some really cheap needle files from Harbor Freight, and some larger, but MUCH rougher files by GearWrench. In order to get a readable surface to impression, I file what I need to file, then wrap some find sandpaper around a small screwdriver and smooth out the cuts. Then it is pretty easy to see the impressioning marks. And it costs much less than the Grobet I use at home.

Thanks all I thought that is what confused me when I wrote the last reply I am looking for a number 4 swiss cut rather than a number 4 swiss made.

Was a case of me thinking if it is made in Switzerland then surely it is a swiss cut.

I will have a look for something swiss cut instead of swiss made.

Thanks for the replies and info
