7 Pin Schlage C Keyway

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

7 Pin Schlage C Keyway

Postby caliusoptimus » 18 Sep 2015 17:32

Hi! First post here so I'll throw in an introduction after the body of my question.

Is there a 7 pin key out there for the schlage C keyway? Reason I ask is because of this practice lock I purchased on ebay.

I can use a 6 pin key with a #9 pin in the last chamber but that's a little underwhelming. Now a #9 pin in the 6th position and a #2 in the 7th would be a little more devious!

Also, has anyone seen these locks in use? I can attest that with radical bitting and security pins these things are quite difficult to open without a key.

Quick intro:

Hey folks! Figured I'd introduce myself and tell you a little about how I got into locks. I've been a machinist for about 10 years and I am currently working as a machinist/engineer for my own LLC. I find that learning new mechanisms has been a boost to my creativity when designing new things for my day job. I got into lock picking after picking my first wafer lock with a paperclip. Since then I've taken every opportunity to learn new locks and techniques for almost no reason other than boredom relief. Gotta spend the girlfriend's change jar somehow!

Bet you bought that practice lock from MrWizard. Really top notch great guy.

There are 7 pin blanks, or you can file back the shoulder of a six pin blank.

There are not 7 pin blanks per se, however there are control blanks which have a fixed depth in the 7th position.

Yes, I see them all the time. Most businesses around here use them.

What are they called that would be nice to have and my brief search came up with nothing. Its probably cheaper to make a control out of then buying a control key

Came from the seller "smoking-deals". Although there is a GIF of a wizard at the bottom!

Any idea where the blanks can be found?

I'll keep an eye out for those.

The lock itself is a 7-pin generic cylinder manufactured by Ilco.

Typically "drilled 7, pinned 6" for the generic cylinders of that length.

Ilco produces cylinders like this because several other OEMs (Lockwood, Yale, Sargent, Corbin-Russwin) have 7-pin keying systems and they simplify manufacturing processes by making cylinders in those sizes the same way.

You won't find 7-pin Schlage C keyblanks but like others here have said you can use a 6-pin LFIC control key blank for this purpose as long as you are aware that you won't be able to key the locks to certain bittings in the 7th chamber.

Was thinking of the control keys when I said 7 pin key blanks were available.

And Smoking-Deals is MrWizard here. :)

This is identical to one I purchased from Ultimate Lock Picking Practice Locks.

http://learnlockpicking.com/

Very useful and easy to change up and practice on.

Good luck!

A couple of years ago I was called to rekey a house. The front door had a Baldwin, 7-pin, Schlage C mortise cylinder. All the rest of the house was Kwikset. Real Estate company only wanted the basic rekey and no changes or upgrades. But...... I could not resist cutting back the shoulder on an SC4 and pinning all 7 spaces.

I did a similar funny-type thing 25 years ago cause the client only requested one key, made me think he was going to the hardware store to save
some money on my 'over a dollar' key prices. My Dad chewed my ass and made me go back & fix it, I was pissed off, how dare that guy try to save money!

The only classic keyway Schlage 7-pin keys are control keys for LFIC 6-pin cores.

I'm thinking about building one of these. Does anyone know what the Ilco part number is for this cylinder?

Just order a Ilco 1 1/4" Schlage mortise cylinder. It will come drilled for 7 pins. 7205SC1

Yes - the 7th position is cut to depth 6, or 0.245. Here's what the key looks like
